There are many differences between first-degree murder, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and involuntary manslaughter. If someone is not aware of the laws it could get tricky for them. A first-degree murder is when it was planned ahead of time, premeditated, intentional killing that’s a felony murder. For example a man was planning how to kill his wife to try and hide evidence because she cheated on him with his best friend for about 2 years. When investigators arrive to the scene they will observe and determine it was first-degree murder because of the way that things were made. One tragic decision in October of 2012 changed the lives of 5 young men forever. One of these young men, Danzele Johnson, lost his life that day; the other four have been convicted of his murder. These young men were committing a felony at the time of his death and they are being held accountable for his death under the felony murder rule. The charge carries lengthy sentences for all four men, between 45 and 55 years. In the words of Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill, “If you start a fire your responsible for all it burns, even if it burns you...and that's the basis of felony murder,"(Yuill). The reasoning behind charging the young men with felony murder is sound, if they had not been committing the felony, the death would not have occurred. The Elkhart four are now serving the severe sentences they deserve under the felony murder rule.

A sentence for second degree murder is normally decided by states with a lot of determining factors. The sentence for this can range from 15 years to life. An example of second degree murder would be coming home to find your wife cheating on you and then the next day you see him and you fire three shots. You miss your target and hit another person.

Murder, a common occurrence in American society, is thought of as a horrible, reprehensible atrocity. Why then, is it thought of differently when the state government arranges and executes a human being, the very definition of premeditated murder? Capital punishment has been reviewed and studied for many years, exposing several inequities and weaknesses, showing the need for the death penalty to be abolished.
When someone is being sentenced for first-degree murder are always punished by at least "life in prison," often "life without the possibility of parole," and in some jurisdictions by death by electric chair or lethal injection.
To be found guilty of first degree murder, it must be proven that killed someone with malice aforethought, meaning it was planned, premeditated. First degree murder is to kill malevolence, to kill either intentionally and deliberately or recklessly with the utmost disregard for human life. Premeditation may be fashioned immediately and does not require a lengthy period of contemplation. The death penalty is recognized in Thirty-eight states. Capital first-degree murder or aggravated first-degree murder is categorized in killings viewed as deserving of capital punishment. Life imprisonment or death penalty is the punishment resulted in a conviction. States who do not recognized the death penalty, aggravated murder carries life imprisonment. When aggravated or capital murder is committed in a heinous or monstrous fashion, it is considered homicide (Lippman, 2006).

The procedure known as “parole” in the criminal justice system has been in practice in the United States since the late 1800’s when it was begun in a reformatory in Elmira, New York. It’s process provides for early conditional release from prison for convicted felons, after part of their prison sentence has been served, and they are found to be eligible for parole based on factors such as: conduct while incarcerated, rehabilitative efforts/progress, type of offense, and remorse for their crime. Its use has been expanded to many states, and today has become the primary way by which offenders are released from prisons and correctional institutions. Unfortunately, parole is not always rewarded to worthy inmates, thus putting society at risk for repeated crimes that often outweigh the benefits of parole, therefore, parole should be abolished and inmates should be made to complete their full sentences. Prison inmates are usually sentenced by the severity of their crimes, as well as their mental intention at the time of the act. For example: a person who commits murder intentionally expects to take the life of another in reckless disregard for human life, and knows that the act itself which he or she has decided to commit, will surely bring about death. However, in the case of manslaughter, which is also the taking of a human life, there is no actual intention to bring about death. The act that lead to someone’s death, is measured by the circumstances that made the person kill such as self-defense, or a crime of passion because the killer was provoked in such a way that a chain of events lead to violence which eventually resulted in peril. Because of the difference in how these crimes are carried out, inmates are sentenced differently; some are sentenced to life in prison, and others are sentenced to several years and will be eligible for parole after serving part of their sentence. Homicide is a felony widely regarded as one of, if not the, worst offences a human can commit.
Causation is used in criminal cases in order to determine what the accused should be charged with or convicted of. The basic rule of causation is that a person is responsible for the natural and probable consequences of their actions. Causation helps the trial jury understand the difference between crimes like first degree murder, and involuntary manslaughter. Because, while the essence of both of those crimes is the same, a person is being accused of causing the death of another person, the person’s role in the death of the victim are different, therefore they have varying degrees of responsibility. Murder is considered a serious crime in our country. The loosely defined term of murder implies that a person who kills another human being with intent is known as being the worst kind of violent crime we see in our society. Any unlawful killing requires that a living person be killed and it does not mean that the guilty person feels any hatred or spite in order to plan and execute the act of murder. Moreover, the destructive acts that end peoples lives are classified as homicides which include manslaughter and first and second degree murder. More important, the justice system has put different labels on such crimes, but it also allows room for criminals to get away with murder.
There are many problems in society today that are not always easily detected. Although these problems may be terrible problems, they are still, for different reasons, difficult to identify. Because these problems are so hard to identify criminals are able to commit these crimes multiple times. One of these problems is child molestation.
