Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is an early 19th century cautionary tale examining the dark, self-destructive side of human reality and human soul. It is written in the Romantic era where society greatly valued scientific and technological advancement. Throughout the novel, Shelley expresses her concerns of extreme danger when man transgresses science and all ethical values are disregarded. The implications of debatable experimentation and thriving ambition could evoke on humanity are explored in the novel. Likewise, “Blade Runner”, a sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott in 1982 is a futuristic representation of Los Angeles in 2019. The film reflects its key widespread fears of its time, particularly the augmentation of globalization, commercialism and consumerism. The film depicts a post-apocalyptic hell where bureaucracy and scientific endeavoring predominate in an industrial world of artifice and endless urban squalor.
“Frankenstein”, otherwise known as the “Modern Prometheus” explores the prominent theme of scientific progression and the transgression of science threatening religion in the post-Augustan age where society valued the power of the imagination and the spirit. Allusions to Coleridge works such as “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” act as an effective tool to re-iterate many Romantic values. Also, Shelley alludes to Galvani’s experimentations in the late 18th century to mirror that of Victor’s “infused spark of being” into a “monster of hideous proportions”. Shelley utilizes a framing device to parallel the expeditions of Walton to the trials of Victor through the use of Walton’s opening letters. This illustrates the replicants are in fact a manifestation of mankind in its purest form and the detrimental effects of the vices and follies of humanity.
In conclusion, both Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” are cautionary tales despite being written in different time periods. The central themes of scientific progression, science vs. religion and marginalization is explored within both texts, tied by various techniques to represent each text as a product of its time shaped by contextual values. Moderation within humanity is necessary to limit mankind’s transgression of knowledge and technological advances.

Literature and film have always held a strange relationship with the idea of technological progress. On one hand, with the advent of the printing press and the refinements of motion picture technology that are continuing to this day, both literature and film owe a great deal of their success to the technological advancements that bring them to widespread audiences. Yet certain films and works of literature have also never shied away from portraying the dangers that a lust for such progress can bring with it. The modern output of science-fiction novels and films found its genesis in speculative ponderings on the effect such progress could hold for the every day population, and just as often as not those speculations were damning. Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis are two such works that hold great importance in the overall canon of science-fiction in that they are both seen as the first of their kind. It is often said that Mary Shelley, with her authorship of Frankenstein, gave birth to the science-fiction novel, breathing it into life as Frankenstein does his monster, and Lang's Metropolis is certainly a candidate for the first genuine science-fiction film (though a case can be made for Georges Méliès' 1902 film Le Voyage Dans la Lune, his film was barely fifteen minutes long whereas Lang's film, with its near three-hour original length and its blending of both ideas and stunning visuals, is much closer to what we now consider a modern science-fiction film). Over two centuries ago, Mary Shelley created a gruesome tale of the horrific ramifications that result when man over steps his bounds and manipulates nature. In her classic tale, Frankenstein, Shelley weaves together the terrifying implications of a young scientist playing God and creating life, only to be haunted for the duration of his life by the monster of his own sordid creation. Reading Shelley in the context of present technologically advanced times, her tale of monstrous creation provides a very gruesome caution. For today, it is not merely a human being the sciences are lusting blindly to bring to life, as was the deranged quest of Victor Frankenstein, but rather to generate something potentially even more dangerous and horrifying with implications that could endanger the entire world and human population.
Since its publication in 1818, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has grown to become a name associated with horror and science fiction. To fully understand the importance and origin of this novel, we must look at both the tragedies of Mary Shelley's background and her own origins. Only then can we begin to examine what the icon "Frankenstein" has become in today's society.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was a literary piece that touched on many different issues, not only in her time, but also today. The creation of life in Frankenstein was Shelley’s symbolic warning to the new industrialized era. “It also [can] be seen to be warning about the dangers of uncontrolled application of technology and its use without proper morality” (Brachneos). The warning in Frankenstein applies today more than ever because of the creation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and computers that “think for themselves” The two are connected in a sense. Some would argue that Victor, the character that created the monster wanting to play od, is like the programmers of AI computers today.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, explores the monstrous and destructive affects of obsession, guilt, fate, and man’s attempt to control nature. Victor Frankenstein, the novel’s protagonist and antihero, attempts to transcend the barriers of scientific knowledge and application in creating a life. His determination in bringing to life a dead body consequently renders him ill, both mentally and physically. His endeavors alone consume all his time and effort until he becomes fixated on his success. The reason for his success is perhaps to be considered the greatest scientist ever known, but in his obsessive toil, he loses sight of the ethical motivation of science. His production would ultimately grieve him throughout his life, and the consequences of his undertaking would prove disastrous and deadly. Frankenstein illustrates the creation of a monster both literally and figuratively, and sheds light on the dangers of man’s desire to play God.

In 1816, a time accompanied with great political and industrial revolutions, Mary Shelley wrote the novel Frankenstein. While Frankenstein comments upon some modern anxieties —parenthood, isolation and abandonment— the novel also touches upon the meaning and fears behind bioethics and scientific discovery. The idea of science and discovery develops into this horror story, in which the scientific ambition’s of Victor Frankenstein harms mankind and himself rather than helping it. Tampering with or altering nature also stems from this fear of scientific discovery as well. Through analyzing the journey and aftermath of Victor Frankenstein’s monstrous creation, Mary Shelley questions the sake of scientific discovery and deems its effects to be detrimental.
Both Blade Runner and Brave new world present a dystopian future with a bleak vision of the world. Frankenstein really is a failed attempt at a love story in my level-headed opinion. I didn’t really care for it all that much so it will hardly be discussed in this essay. (sorry)
