1) The tendencies in present-day American Society that the author Vonnegut is satirizing the tendencies in our society to put being politically correct above all else, and trying to make sure everyone is treated equally with no one being better than the other, and try to make it seem like everyone equally fails and succeeds at everything so feelings aren’t hurt. The story argues for equality in a sense that everyone is equally skilled and treated exactly the same. In that case there will not be one individual better than another. The theme of the story was the whole issue of being equal. Although, the way they tried to make “equality” among people wasn’t the ideal worth fighting for because they would torture the citizens in harsh ways.

It’s more effective telling it in third person than if Harrison Bergeron would have told it in first person because since the narrator is in the story, the character may not have had knowledge of all the events taking place in the story.
4) I disagree with the comment made by the critics comparing it to “Harrison Bergeron” because the narrator never passed judgment during the story. In the part of the story when the ballerina was wearing the repulsive mask it was an indicator of her extraordinary beauty and to admit the attempt that true equality has failed, and will never succeed. No one is fundamentally the same because deep down everyone thinks, acts and is different.
5) I think it’s relevant to the story because the story of “Harrison Bergeron” is presented with such a tight, strict and controlled society and in which any signs of rebellion that is hardly successful and if ever successful quickly demolished in violent ways. Just like that brief moment in the story when Harrison declared himself to be “Emperor” and dances with his “Empress” with beauty and joy, was quickly eradicated with gunshots for both by Diana Moon Glampers. Any sign of love, grace or things not following the regimen is quickly taken care of in a violent way. In the ending, Harrison’s mother sees the shocking footage on live television but due to their ways of controlling individuals and trying to create equality she is quickly erased of her memories
