According to Forrest Stroud (2016) fake news is “false information or propaganda published under the guise of being authentic news”, furthermore these news channels or websites push their fake content to mislead consumers. Fake news has different aspects in it and in this essay I will be discussing the difference between; satirical news; clickbait in social media feeds ;false balance in news reporting and outright invented news.
“Satirical news is a genre that employs humour when making commentary on individuals or activities and their perceived vices, shortcomings, or mistakes” (Marisa A, 2017). Annexure A is an example of satirical news, where President Donald Trump allegedly posted on twitter addressing a certain ethnic group, telling them to leave the country. This type of heading is to lure the readers to the read the article, and because of previous “threats” the president had made about deporting immigrates this kind of article would catch the attention of many. The intention of this article was to simply highlight the presidents past statements and errors. It was also discovered that the twitter posts that Donald Trump allegedly sent were fake and were created by another source so to make the article more authentic.
Fake news does not only include satirical news but also has clickbait as another form of fake news. “Clickbait is online content that uses sensationalized headlines and text descriptions to tempt a person into clicking to view the original web article at the source publication. Clickbait tends to spread quickly through social media” (Beal V, 2017). This form of news publication is used for gaining a profit every time a user clicks to read more on the article.
