Explosive Maria
Santa Maria is an active volcano in Guatemala. This paper is about Santa Maria Volcano because it has one of the largest eruptions, it is active, and is a major impact to the earth around it. Santa Maria is important for many reasons.. The earth needs it to function properly in that area.
What inspired this report is that Santa Maria is an active volcano. Santa Maria is active, and the activeness gives more to write about. “Santa Maria-Santiaguito is one of five most active volcanoes in the last 150 years, and if only the last 50 years, are considered, it is the most active.”(WILLIAM I ROSE, JR.) This volcano may erupt again in our lifetime since it is an active volcano.

This explosion was very big but wasn’t its last.“The cataclysmic explosion of Santa María in 1902 was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century.”(Jeannie A. J. Scott) This explosion impacted the mountain and the area around it. “ It devastated the surrounding landscape, and left a huge crater in the side of the mountain.”( Jeannie A. J. Scott). This explosion has damaged the mountain. ”Extrusion of the dome began in the center of the explosion crater created by Santa Maria's 1902 activity.”(WILLIAM I ROSE, JR.). This explosion was a major one in history. ”Flows, pyroclastic debris, and lahar materials directly associated with the Santa Maria composite cone occur on three sides of the dome.”(WILLIAM I ROSE, JR.). It has damaged itself and the area around it. Santa Maria is also near other volcanos and mountains. “The Central American volcanic arc runs through five countries: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (right). The volcano helps but when erupts can hurt surrounding area. Santa María is a major volcano in the region that has both provided and taken away resources for people. It has given crops to the land. Including “On Santa María alone, there are crops of coffee, rubber, sugarcane and cardamom.” (Ben Johrendt). These resources help Guatemala thrive. Without Santa Maria it could hurt them. When Santa Maria erupts it can also hurt the land by the lava destroying crops. “Eisen describes a “terrific hurricane” that devastated the vegetation around Santa María with five hours of powerful wind and torrential ash fall; almost every tree in the area had been burned, stripped, and felled by what he assumed were repeated lightning strikes – we now know this devastation was caused by pyroclastic flows, and probably by a directed blast.” (Jeannie A. J. Scott). Also the Lava can devastate the earth around it by burning everything around it.”A strong smell of sulfur was reported as far away as Guatemala City. The eruption column was 27 to 29 km high, and the huge, thick ash cloud kept the entire region in darkness for several days.”(Jeannie A. J. Scott). The way it helps and hurts the earth around it is interesting and help write this report.

The mission was established initially in 1690 as Mission San Francisco de los Tejas in East Texas. The mission was abandoned and moved to the West Bank of the San Antonio River and was called Mission San Francisco de la Espada in 1731. Its purpose was to serve the Coahuiltecan tribes and educate them in religion.
Mission Santa Barbara was founded on December 4, 1786 by Father Fermin de Lasuen. Mission Santa Barbara was the 10th mission founded. Mission Santa Barbara was built near Siujtu,a Chumash village. Water was channeled from adam constructed in Pedragoso Creek, high above the mission. A two-mile long stone aqueduct carried water to a storage reservoir and settling tank constructed in 1806, and attributed to Indian mason Miguel Blanco of Baja, California. A second aqueduct carried drinking water to the mission,its fountains and lavanderia washing facilities. The original buildings were adobe,unpretentious, and a clay common to dry areas. The original purpose of the mission was christianazation of the Chumash Indians. Mission Santa Barbara is one of two missions who still run under Franciscan order.

Mount Tambora, located on the Island of Sumbawa, Indonesia is classified as a Stratovolcano. Also known as a composite volcano, Tambora is a tall conical volcano (cone like structure) where layers of the walls are built by hardened lava and volcanic ash. The term composite is used to describe the volcano due to the composite layered structure built from sequential outpourings of eruptive materials1. Among the most common types of volcanoes, Tambora also shares its destructive prowess with best-known volcanoes such as Krakota (1883) and Vesuvius (79 A.D). The Island of Sumbawa is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain (a group of islands in the southern Maritime Southeast Asia) and is in the province of West Nusa Tenggara3. A map of Mount Tambora is shown in Figure 1 to provide a better perspective of its location. Interestingly enough, Tambora forms its own peninsula on Sumbawa, known as the Sanggar Peninsula. In April of 1815, after years of dormancy, Mount Tambora erupted with great intensity, approximately 7 on the volcanic explosivity index, which is shown in Figure 2. It has been estimated that the eject volume of Tambora was 160 cubic kilometres, which represents the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The death toll has been projected to be at least 71,000 people, of who over 15% were killed directly from the eruption1. The remaining 75% have been thought to succumb to starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout decimated the agricultural industry in the region. Following the eruption, a volcanic winter ensued. Mission of San Carlos Borromeo Del Rio Carmelo more commonly know as the Carmel Mission is apart of California’s remarkable chain of 21 missions. This exceptional landmark shows 244 years of historical significance through its architecture, museums, and exhibitions that hold many scared preserved artifacts.
The first time I saw Mt. Rainier for myself, was last summer when my boyfriend and I drove to Washington. It was the most beautiful, peaceful looking mountain I have ever seen. However, underneath it's great beauty, it hides a deadly secret. Mt. Rainier is one of the most dangerous volcanoes that we have here in the United States. One of the reasons it is so dangerous is because of it's great beauty. People enjoy looking at it, and the area that surrounds it, so they have made their homes here. Mt Rainier is not the only volcano I am interested in, in fact this last summer I also went to Mt. St. Helens and Crater Lake. But it is the volcano I chose to research for this paper because it does have so much beauty and at the same time so much power. I already know the basics about volcanoes, how they form, the different types, etc., but I wanted to find out more about what would happen if this great volcano were to erupt, what type of eruption would it be, and how would it affect the people that live around it.
There are forty-two volcanoes in Mexico. Mexico’s volcanoes are on the North American Continental tectonic plate. Out of all the volcanoes the three most active are Popocatepetl, El Chichon, and Colima. El Chichon had its last eruption in 1982. No one living near this mountain saw it coming because its last eruption was one hundred and thirty years earlier and was minor. They also ignored the earthquake on the night of March twenty-eighth. But in the morning no one could miss the ash and debris in the air. Most of the two thousand people that died, died from breathing in the harmful gases. It cooled the whole earth the following year. Mission San Juan Capistrano is a mission like no other. Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1775 and in 1776. Serra’s Chapel was the first permanent building. It was made out of Adobe brick instead of wood. Local native Americans helped build the mission and hang the bells. The people worked for 8 days then stopped. They buried the mission. The people came back the next year to dig out and rebuild the mission. A neat fact about San Juan Capistrano is the brand of their livestock is the letters C,A and P twisted together. San Juan Capistrano is called the jewel of the missions. This unique mission is not an ordinary, everyday mission.

The eruption on Mount Saint Helens has a specific cause and comes with many effects. A multifold of people would say that the “mountain looked like the site of an atomic blast” (Bredeson 30). That is a very accurate depiction as it took great power to inflict as much damage as it did. The reason for this impressive amount of force is that when magma is built up with pressure and an earthquake hits, the pressure gets magnified and the volcano explodes (Lewis). This is exactly what happened inside Mount Saint Helens. Furthermore, it has been revealed that “The earthquake that triggered the explosion was a 5.2 on the Richter scale” (Gunn 559). The earthquake to the magma can be compared as a match to gasoline. Even though the earthquake was not huge, the scale of the eruption was much greater than that of the earthquake (Gunn 560). The earthquake was only the trigger that allowed for more devastating things to occur. On May 18th, 1980, one of the most prominent volcanic eruptions in US History took place in the state of Washington. Mount St. Helens had been dormant for almost 100 years before March 15th.
