1. Trolling is simply fishing for salmon from a slow-moving boat. Special trolling motors are available to move the boat gradually along through the water at speeds that will not scare off the salmon. Many use this method in tidewaters.

2. Drift fishing is similar to trolling except a motor is only used on occasion. Fishing in this way is best for those areas where there is a heavy concentration of salmon in one place. There are three main methods of casting that anglers use in this type of fishing, such as the following:

• Mooching uses a lightweight curved weight that allows the hooked, plug-cut herring to travel deep enough to reach the salmon. The herring spins in the water to attract the salmon.
