The Russian mafia started from basically nothing and was looked at as a hero in the eyes of the poverty-stricken country of Russia. The speed bumps that the organization went through caused them to adapt and overcome adversity through their brothers and gave them the power and perseverance. In researching about the Russian mafia I learned about their start in the Imperial period, then the challenges they went through during the Soviet era, and how they are structured within the organization.
The Russian mafia originated back in the Imperial period, which started around 1720 in the form of thievery and banditry due to most of the population of Russia being peasants. Then in 1917 the Bolshevik Rebellion the Thieves World was an active and thriving which forced Vladimir Lenin to attempt to purge these Rebels, but Vladimir Lenin failed.

So, Joseph Stalin took it in his own hands to catch and imprison all of these criminals in gulags, Soviet work camps, and the powerful criminals would work their way up the ranks of the organization.
