“A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life, whose misadventured piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.” This is from the prologue of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is a play written in the 1590’s that tells a tale of two young lovers trapped in a spiteful brawl of two families. To the reader’s despair, the two lovers which the readers have grown to love and admire, both end by their own hand. The menacing question is: Who caused this story to be filled with woe? The death of Romeo and Juliet can be foreshadowed because of the root of the problem, their parents. In, Act 1, the reader exhibits a scene where the Capulets hold a feast. This feast held by the Capulets is one to blame because it started the controversy held in Romeo’s head if Rosaline was truly the fairest. Seeing Juliet there alive and beautiful, we can say, excited him. After the feast, it was no longer Rosaline who was the victim of Romeo’s longing but it was Juliet. “The beautiful Rosaline whom you love so much will be at the Capulet’s traditional feast, along with every beautiful woman in Verona” (Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 84-86). These words are the driving force that persuade Romeo to go to the feast even through the dangers of being under his enemies’ noses. This next quote from Juliet is what confirms her love for the dazzling Romeo. “The only man I love is the son of the only man I hate! I saw him too early without knowing who he was, and I found out who he was too late! Love is a monster for making me fall in love with my worst enemy” (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 136-139). Juliet, being at the age to marry, Capulet asked her nicely to look and meet the young gentlemen for a possible spouse. Whether by fate or purpose, Juliet is undoubtedly attracted to Romeo and “falls in love at first sight”. This connects to the topic and genre of fairy tales. In a fairy tale, the main plot is that a princess falls in love with a prince and they fall in love after a struggle and they live happily ever after. Shakespeare’s drama is also very similar to these stories but takes a dark turn and “the love at first sight” is what causes the demise of the lovers.
