An author puts all characters in a book for a reason. It might be to teach a lesson or to tell about different people. The author uses personality to create unique individuals. These characters’ actions tell readers what they would do in a crisis. The character’s role in the story shows where people stand in the world and how people treat others. The personality, actions, and role in the story similarities and differences of Stacey and T.J., two characters in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, express the different people during the Great Depression. While Stacey is a hard-working seventh grader, T.J. is a failing bully. Both of them are proud of who they are, but T.J. is proud in a self-centered way and Stacey is proud of his accomplishments.
In 1952, Ray Bradbury published the science fiction short story “A Sound Of Thunder.” The story was about a hunter named Eckels who goes to a company called Time Safari Inc, which allows hunters to travel back in time to hunt the Tyrannosaurus rex, while he back in time he steps on a butterfly which causes the present time to change. The film version of “A Sound Of Thunder” that came out in 2005 has a similar plot; a group of hunters go back in time at Time Safari Inc. which causes an unknown change in the present that Travis Ryer and Sonya Rand try to find the cause and fix.
In the chapter Silver Hair, Golden Years from the book "Somebody told me" by Rick Bragg, the characters had many similarities as well as many differences. The thing I found most common was the fact that most of the characters had a poverty filled childhood and found a way to make a living as they got older; however, some did not do as well as others.

Two people with two completely different characteristics have something alike. Both Dally and Johnny are mentally tough because of their parents. Johnny and Dally’s parents both do not care for them and could care less about them. This encounter makes the character seem real, someone the reader can relate to. The same inspiration can be said happened for Flowers for Algernon. Specific events in Daniel Keyes’s life led to the formation of many main characters.
In the novel Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden, many various responses to war are shown through Marsden’s use of characterisation and plot. The nature of these responses varies greatly from person to person, with each character having a distinctly unique response. In particular, Ellie’s response, which shows an increase of violent and aggressive thoughts and behaviour. Also, Robyn’s response, which involves unexpected physical strength, triggered when circumstances require it. Finally, Chris’s response, which displays a waste of his potential and capabilities as a result of persistent drug and alcohol habits, used to avoid the inevitable war taking place. People change every day, hour, minute, and even second. You aren’t the same person now that you were a second ago. Changes in character occur all the time throughout real life and in literature. T.J. Avery from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is no exception. His actions only cause him grief, and they don’t change him, but the events that he and many other African-Americans in the 1930s have to go through definitely make him the most interesting character.
Authors develop characters’ personalities in order to add depth to their story and allow readers to feel more connected to the characters. Beyond this, characterization also allows authors to develop the themes of their stories in a more clear manner. A prime example of this would be in the poem Judith, where the author contrasts Judith and Holofernes’ personalities in order to develop the major themes of heroism and having faith in God.
Through the book, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, Mildred Taylor put Cassie Logan through hard times, but Cassie never gave up. Cassie shows courage by standing up to her rival Lillian Jean, and she also stood up against the teacher. Through these actions she shows that she is sassy and outspoken girl. This was during the time when white controlled the black, and kind of ruled them.
Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character’s perspective and their emotions and that in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read during school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it’s on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she’s capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few issues she tries to work through.
The characters show many traits that show who they really are, these two men have marked the line between what is right and wrong. Sanger Rainsford has been put in the place of prey, giving him a view of what it feels like to be hunted. Zaroff being overly proud went too far and crossed the lines of morality.
The central theme of the story is the age-old conflict of life and death. On a more personal level with First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, the round character and protagonist of "The Things They Carried", it is a conflict of love, his antagonist and of war.
This leads the reader to show sentiment as through the perspective of most would feel for the character. The author also shows attitude of a sense of connection to the world, as the story feels like most people trying to get back into the
Characters in the stories we have read so far this semester have been faced with a multitude of problems, emotions and impulses to work through. It seems that from three stories the characters carry out very different actions, but they all have an underlying bond, selfishness and the desire to be something there not. It also seems that they are judged in the eyes of the narrator, as either succeeding or failing due to the way they carried themselves throughout the story.
