Imagine the view from atop Mt. Everest. You can see the many snow-capped, rugged mountain peaks, and nothing but a clear blue sky. You can see for miles all around you. What an extraordinary experience! You might ask yourself, how did I get all the way up here? The answer: rock climbing. Rock climbing is a strenuous physical activity that can enhance your feeling of accomplishment. It has many health benefits, and also an exciting adventuresome sport that once you are introduced to it, you’re hooked. One of the first requirements is to first understand the concept of rock climbing and having adequate and proper equipment. Second, adequate training is a must. Once the concepts are understood, it is important to locate the best places to climb. After all of these preparations, it’s time to climb.
In any given situation with rock climbing being prepared with the proper equipment is a must. There are many things required for rock climbing according to Steven Edwards author of Rock Climbing equipment and techniques. “Although it is possible to rock climb without equipment, it is difficult to do so safely.” Equipment suggested for safely rock climbing include: shoes, helmet, harnesses, rope, carabineers, webbing, and belay device.

In the novel “Into Thin Air” written by Jon Krakauer, Krakauer goes through his own journey of climbing Mount Everest and how commercialized the climbing of Everest had really become. In his journey he explains how climbers have paid as much as $65,000 to join a guided group that would lead them to the summit. The author bluntly states that some of the novices were not qualified to climb Mount Everest. With this amateurity it only made the journey twice as much difficult and dangerous. Roping is a sport that most believe simply to be timing and performance of the cowboy and the cattle. However, roping is actually much, much, more. One quality that is necessary for a roper to be successful is momentum. Momentum is the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured of a product of its mass and its velocity (Jones). This concept of momentum can determine what results are obtained by the roper. For example, when a cowboy rides a horse and the horse accelerates, the mass of cowboy and horse together gain momentum. In contrast to that the cattle that leave the shoot and accelerate to escape the rope also gains momentum. The amounts of momentum determine how far each can run in the arena before the rope makes contact with the animal. Another concept that relies on momentum is the rope itself. The cowboy is required to swing the rope with enough momentum to make the loop stand out a sufficient amount so that it is extended and open enough to secure around the animals head or heels.
Individuals take pride in the positive traits derived from the sport. Krakauer expands,“During my thirty-four-year tenure as a climber, I’d found that the most rewarding aspects of mountaineering derive from the sport’s emphasis on self-reliance, on making critical decisions and dealing with the consequences, on personal responsibility” (176). Despite the danger, success in mountain climbing results in a number of disciplined qualities. Regarding the aforementioned psychological effects of risky behavior, adventure can be invigorating as it is rewarding. Bass recounts, “There has to be a spirit of adventure to it, too, and an element of uncertainty and risk. Then when I persevere and prevail, when I overcome and make it, I come back down to the lowlands, back to the bankers and the regulatory officials, and by golly I’m recharged and ready to take them all on” (Bass et al 2). Rob Hall’s Adventure Consultants and Scott Fischer’s Mountain Madness consisted of four guides, sixteen clients, and a number of Sherpas who together formed the groups with the goal of climbing to the Summit of Mount Everest. Every group member had an individual personal motivator for climbing Mount Everest. Some were wealthy individuals and paid thousands to check the climb off their bucket list, others joined the groups to record the experience in their respective travel magazines, while the leaders Hall and Fischer previously reached the Summit and wanted to increase the number of clients they led to the top. The members were not interdependent of one another in completing the task. Each member could have climbed the mountain individually, but decided to join the groups with one common goal to reach the Summit. Their task force groups were temporary as they would only last until the members returned from climbing the mountain. The Adventure Consultants and Mountain Madness witnessed positive and negative effects of their groups’ formation throughout their time on the mountain.
Mount Everest is a beautiful marvel of geology. Nature’s forces of tectonics and erosion all came together to form the magnificent mountain. Just as nature carved Everest into being, the mountain also etches itself into humanity. It is, after all, human nature to explore and overcome obstacles to reach the the biggest, deepest, and highest of everything. I have more confidence than what I thought I did before. Sometimes when I go rock climbing I think back at this moment and just laugh to myself. The struggle, the frustration, and pain, but all worthwhile. I now know when I am faced with a new and uncomfortable situation I’m not so worried or nervous instead I challenge it. Everyone encounters a fear in their life, some walk away and some overcome it, am glad I did. I may feel out of my comfort zone in the beginning, but I know that as I practice and stay persistent being in that new situation and as my skills get better; I will slowly but surely feel more comfortable. It is a truly great, free feeling when you accomplish a goal you have set for yourself.
