Much of the book concerns itself with the title character’s methods of detection, and in the character of Pudd’nhead Wilson the reader finds a strong critique of scientific positivism. In the employment of natural scenery for certain human action, man’s misuse of nature is criticized. Likewise, the conclusion of the novel also focuses on social manipulation of natural processes, with a pessimistic conclusion. Pudd’nhead Wilson rejects the interference of social construction and scientific interpretation in man’s experience with nature.
In Mark Twain’s novel, Pudd’n Head Wilson, there are many episodes of cross dressing, identity theft and disguise. The novels main characters Roxy, Tom, Chambers, and Pudd’n head Wilson all have a role in these various episodes. Some of the characters are successful in their endeavors, as when Roxy disguises herself as a man and Tom disguises himself as a woman in various parts of the novel. On the other hand, the case of identity theft between Tom and Chambers turns out to be unsuccessful in the end. Then there’s the episode of disguise and Pudd’n head Wilson. I believe that if it weren’t for Robert’s visit and presence, the narrator more than likely wouldn’t have had this kind of experience. Maybe, the narrator wouldn’t have changed his mind of thinking and feeling at that moment. Thinking about David Walker’s Appeal and gentrification in terms of the segregation of freedom, wealth, resources, and religion, it is clear that life for freed Black people and those still enslaved in the 1800’s were more similar than different. Black folks in both positions still endured the evilness/restriction whiteness placed upon their lifestyles. From an economic standpoint and communal, Black people in America still didn’t have any control over their future nor could they fully protect their community. The long and dangerous journey halfway across the continent was definitely not for the faint of heart. After reviewing both accounts, the general impressions were that of hardship, perseverance, and a will to survive. All for the hopes of a better and more successful life that the new lands promised. In his satiric and forward book The Future of Life, Wilson employs a slippery slope logical fallacy, classic name-calling, and sarcasm in order to illustrate the unproductive nature of such discussions.
When we arrived at the campground, the first thing the staff did was assign a tent to each Pathfinder – a most cumbersome task.
