In Richard Wright’s novel Native Son, he argues that Bigger Thomas is a reflection of the racism and fear that was present during the Cold War Era. Both Bigger and the people faced the fears of being different, communism and being exposed. From the start, Bigger grew up knowing he was an outsider, so he tries to act tough to cover up being fearful. “He hated his family because he knew that they were suffering and that he was powerless to help them. He knew that the moment he allowed himself to feel to its fulness how they lived, the shame and misery of their lives, he would be swept out of himself with fear and despair.” He puts up a wall around himself as an excuse of being safe.
