“Fences” by August Wilson

Reading the title of this play I did not know what to expect. For some reason I thought it was going to be some sort of Tom Sawyer play, since the title was fences. It was just the first thing that popped into my head. I thought this play had a lot going on at first. It was very powerful since the beginning when the character Troy asks his boss why there aren’t any black employees driving the garbage trucks and why they are only throwing the garbage into the truck. From then on I thought it was going to be about human rights, but there was definitely a lot more to this play then that. Family issues were a big struggle throughout this whole play especially for Troy. His relationship with his son and wife really show him as being the antagonist.
I really liked the aspect of the fence in this play. How Rose explained it that she wanted it to be built because she loves her family and want to keep close her love. It is like Rose knows exactly what is going to happen in the future …show more content…

The only thing Troy can control is the fence; he can only control the actions his son makes to a certain point. Kicking him out isn’t going to stop him. The fence for me shows that when Troy finishes it, he will have something accomplished. He tells Death to come and get him when the fence is done, that shows that he plans to have some sort of resolution when it does get done. This fence is also sort of an obstacle that is stopping worst things from happening. Instead of just leaving from the beginning Troy waits to finish the fence. Also, Bono says that after they finish the fence he will buy his wife a new refrigerator. I just find it fascinating how a playwright can make such a basic object or action, like building a fence, be the center of so many different obstacles and resolutions throughout a
