Yoga & Occupational Therapy Reflection
Yoga is a wonderful exercise and stress-relieving practice. It engages both the mind and body and is often seen as a healing art. Participating in a yoga session at Heat Toga and Wellness was a great experience and useful towards practicing as an occupational therapist.
Yoga Experience
The yoga session was my first time participating in a hot yoga, but I have practiced hatha yoga for many years. The poses were very similar between the two types of yoga. The main difference being between the two was the room was very hot and the poses were held longer in hot yoga. I was not sure if I would like yoga in a hot environment, but it was very enjoyable. I liked that the yoga session was not fast paced and found it to be very relaxing. I also liked how the instructor commented on the different benefits of the poses. I will definitely be doing more backbends to help with allergies this spring. I was at first worried the heat would affect my asthma but thankfully it did not. Therefore, an occupational therapist could find it helpful to incorporate the practice into a client’s recovery program. A big trend with occupational therapy, especially when working with the elderly population, is successful aging. Successful aging is “moving through late life in a way that enables participation in valued activities and sustains life satisfaction” (Schell, B. A. B., Gillen, G., Scaffa, M. E., & Cohn, E. S., 2014, p. 1242). Yoga can be very helpful with successful aging. Practicing a yoga routine can improve stabilization, endurance, bending, and coordination (AOTA, 2014, p. 25). These are all motor skills that can prevent individuals from falling by improving their balance and movement. Therefore, it would be beneficial for an occupational therapist working in health and wellness, home health, or skilled nursing to implement yoga with their
