Reflection On Socioeconomic Issues And Diversity In The Classroom

I spoke with Jamie from Cushing Public School system. She has been a teacher for 21 years. I spoke with her over the telephone on March 13, 2018. I started the conversation about diversity in the classroom, specifically about race. Jamie stated that she has some minorities in her class but she thinks that their socioeconomics background is more of an issue than their race. She went on to explain that due to the students socioeconomics background in regards to parenting or, their life style at home is affecting her student’s ability to learn. We spoke about how some lower socioeconomic issues of some of her students doesn’t always have parents involved in how well the student is doing in school. She stated that some of these student’s parents don’t encourage the student to do their homework at home, or interact with her as their teacher to see what they can do to help, or even communicate with her. Jamie was how had diversity changed since she has been teaching. She gave an example from when she was an elementary teacher since she taught that for 15 years before moving to teach middle school students. She said that early on that parents were more supportive, and involved in her student’s education. Then the school district lines changed and the diversity of the student’s changed. The new students were from a trailer park and they didn’t seem to stay in the area for long, so she had more students that were in and out of her classroom frequently and parent involvement declined. I thanked Jamie for letting me interview her. It was interesting to know that even though diversity has changed in the classroom teachers are trying to give their students the knowledge they need to succeed even when faced with budget crisis for school and the socioeconomic status of students.
