In literature when faced with danger or tremendous stress often times people change. As a result this happened in Red Badge of Courage and The Luck of Roaring Camp. In Red Badge a young boy named Henry undergoes a change of being self-centered to being willingly able to die for others. Then in the Luck of Roaring Camp all the men started to change when the baby was born. Each character or characters in each work had a change based on their circumstances whether it be a positive or negative.
In Red Badge the heroic character Henry undergoes a dramatic change . At first he only thinks about himself and his own concerns as demonstrated in the second battle. It was a predominantly all male camp with the exception of one woman by the name of Cherokee Sal. So this ratio in itself is very odd but because it was all men with some being criminals they all tended to be rowdy and dangerous. The town prostitute Cherokee Sal was start of all the positivity because she became pregnant . A pregnancy was the oddest thing thing the men have seen since they were more familiar with deaths and not births. When the baby was born soon after the camp started to act very strangely. Maybe it was due to the fact that since the baby was born they have started to accumulate more gold. But with that the baby drew out and inner peace in the men. For instance the town saloon got carpet and mirrors so the men could see themselves. Upon seeing themselves they immediately started cleaning by washing and trimming their facial hair. Here the men changed from criminals to basically gentlemen after a baby was born, so there must be a link to change depending on circumstance if this can

People change everyday, whether it is from good to bad or for the better. People often say to themselves, maybe, if I didn't do “blank” this wouldn't have happened. However, the reality is, it happened, and there is no way to change that. Why go around throwing maybe’s around if you cannot change it? Authors purposefully make readers ask those questions. Authors love to create complex characters, characters that go through change. In Ellen Hopkins’ book, Crank, is the perfect example. Ellen Hopkins writes from her own daughter's perspective, Kristina, on how “the monster” changed her own life and her family's life.
It is always said that war changes people. In the short story 'The Red Convertible', Louise Erdrich uses Henry to show how it affects people. In this case, the effects are psychological. You can clearly see a difference between his personalities from before he goes to war compared to his personalities after returns home from the war. Before the war, he is a care-free soul who just likes to have fun. After the war, he is very quiet and defensive, always watching his back as if waiting for someone to strike.

Red Queen is written with such passion, that it envelops the reader in the story, hung on each and every word. A beautiful tale of hardship, romance, and betrayal. Aveyard does an amazing job of making the reader feel as if they are right beside Mare Barrow on her journey, of becoming the Red Queen.

When they find her screaming in bed, Nick's father dehumanizes her by saying: "[Her] screams are not important. I don't hear them because they are not important."

The authors tie in both the past with the present to create a twist on the future of the main characters. “Soldier's Home,” by Ernest Hemingway, and “Battle Royal,” by Ralph Ellison, are both short- fictional stories sharing a common literary characteristic of character development, influenced by the other characters and events in the story.
The hero of The Red Badge of Courage, which was written by Stephen Crane in the late 1800s, was a young private named Henry Fleming, who was fighting for the North in the American Civil War. Like Pip, in Great Expectations, Henry was a commoner. He was new to the Army and few people knew his name. The main difference between Henry and the earlier heroes is that Henry was not born with leadership qualities or traits like bravery. The Red Badge of Courage is a descriptive novel about the courage one can develop if he/she rises above the fear. Henry Fleming was afraid and cowardly but, saw the look in his comrade's eyes and changed his entire mindset on the battle. Henry is my favorite character and the most like me for these reasons, he changed his entire way of thought for his regiment. In the Red Badge of Courage, the protagonist Henry, is a young boy who yearns to be a Great War hero, even though he has never experienced war himself. Anxious for battle, Henry wonders if he truly is courageous, and stories of soldiers running make him uncomfortable. He struggles with his fantasies of courage and glory, and the truth that he is about to experience. He ends up running away in his second battle. Henry is somewhat nave, he dreams of glory, but doesn't think much of the duty that follows.

As you grow up and life changes, you must take charge of your own life and not become so dependent on others. Throughout the course of life a person will encounter many changes, whether good or bad. In 'A&P';, 'The Secret Lion';, and 'A Rose for Emily';, the main characters in the stories are Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily who face changes during their lives. All of these characters are in need of change. Because of their need for change, their lives will become much better. They are filled with wonder and awe about the world around them. No matter what type of person, everyone will encounter changes. It is part of the natural process. A person is encouraged to make these changes for the good. Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily all encounter changes in their lives that fulfill their need to become something different.
