There are a many reasons for the Great Depression. One in particular was the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The stock market crash that came about on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929 was a cause that led to the Great Depression. A few months after the crash, many stockholders lost more than $40 billion dollars. Even though the stock market regain a few of its losses by end of 1930’s but it wasn’t enough to bring America back to what it was. Then there were also many bank failures. After the stock market crash, a period began that lasted for a full decade, from 1929 to 1939, where the nation plunged into the severest and the most prolonged economic depression in history - the Great Depression. During this inevitable period, the economy plummeted and the unemployment rate skyrocketed due to poor economic diversification, uneven distribution of wealth and poor international debt structure.
The great depression came about for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are due to the stock market crash of 1929. Most people think that this is what started the great depression but actually it was only part of it. The upper and lower classes played a big role on wages for what was paid between the two different classes. Because of this wage difference it had an impact on the banking system. Also America became know as a credit nation vs. a debtor nation. Which meant that the United States was owed more money by other countries and the United States owed. Another problem that the United States was having is that the whole dollar vs. gold. During the 1930's the United States was still on a gold value system where paper money had no value. With all of these factors and the stock market crash of 1929 was just the final straw that broke the camels back as the saying goes. With the depression going and 1 out of every 4 people not having a job, the country was in serious trouble. Franklin D. Roosevelt came up with the New Deal. The New Deal was also known as Works Progress Administration (WPA). The program put 8,500,000 of Americans back to work. The work consisted of everything from building public parks and a writers program to paying farmers not to plant crops. This is the part of the New Deal that I will be addressing. The Agricultural Adjustment Act also known as AAA. The AAA act came about to stabilize prices and overproduction on farm products such as cotton, wheat, corn, rice, tobacco, hogs and milk.
There were many causes for the Great Depression. The first and one of the largest was the stock market crash. Before 1929 the stock market was flourishing and everyone wanted to buy stocks. People were so confident in the stock market that they were buying “on margin”, which meant that brokers would lend them 10% of the money they invested (D1). The problems began when stocks were being over speculated. When people began to realize this, they began selling there shares. On October 29, 1929, 16 million shares were sold (D9). This day became known as “Black Thursday”, the day the stock market crashed (D12). The second reason was the overproduction of goods. Factories had already produced too many goods and now there was no demand for them. The government began to raise tariffs to protect Canadian industries but things only led downhill from there.
A major cause of the Depression was that the pay of workers did not increase at all. Because of this, they couldn't afford manufactured goods. While the factories were still manufacturing goods, Americans weren't able to afford them and the factories made no money (Drewry and O'connor 559). Another major cause related to farmers. Farmers weren't doing to well because they were producing more crops and farm products than could be sold at high prices.
The Great Depression was one of the most important historical events that has happened within the last century that impacted every Americans life one way or another. There were many factors that could be an explanation of why The Great Depression happened, but there is no one definitive list of the reasons of what caused The Great Depression. It was a mixture of events in the United States and outside of it that probably led to this period of time to happen. The main reason that everyone could agree on was the event of the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Because of The Crash, it made people go on a bank run which made thousands of banks to close because they simply did not have all the money for all the people wanting to withdraw their savings. Because everyone was trying to take their savings out, most people were turned down by the bank and essentially lost of their savings in the bank. The banks were failing and because they had no more money left, this stopped the banks from having available credit for people to use which made matters even worse for the people. This leads people to poverty and were left with nothing. Because people were poor and were scared of spending their money now, it made people stop buying extra things that weren't essential to live. This was the cause of the unemployment rates during this time period because if no one was buying anything, then there was no reason to keep extra workers for things people are not buying.
The causes of the Great Depression of the 1920's and 1930's has been argued about for generations. Most people agree on several key topics and that it was the severity and length of time the Depression lasted that was actually the most remarkable. Hoover made many noteworthy attempts to try and solve this crisis, yet in the end it was President Roosevelt and his "New Deal", that brought many Americans hope for the future.

The Dow Average a loss of 90% of its value between its record high close of 381.2 on September 3, 1929, and its following bottom of 41.22 on July 8, 1932. That was the worst market in terms of percentage loss in modern U.S. history. It would be another 25 years before the Dow was able regain its September 3 high.
The occurrence of the Great Depression was an inevitable economic disaster that was caused by a variety of reasons and events that happened in the U.S. and across the world. The lack of diversification was one of the main causes of the Great Depression as the dependence on only certain industries like the automobile industry began years before; and because of the prolonged success of such industries, their demise could not have been predicted. World War I was an event that had a major impact on the Great Depression because of the complexity of the international debt owed to the U.S, and the decline of international trade. In addition, the failure of the bank system and the reckless investments that banks, businesses and the American public made contributed to the manifestation of the Great Depression.
It is said that the cause of the catastrophic stock market crash known as the great depression was due mostly to uncontrolled political and industrial systems otherwise known as capitalism. However, the timeline leading up to the Great Depression proves that many other factors played a role in the stock market crash that occurred in the decade of the 1930's. So lets take a look at rather four, factors contributing to the great depression that we will further discuss in the following paragraphs. Four of the main causes that led up to the great depression were unequal distribution of wealth, uncontrolled political and industrial systems, high tariffs and war debts.
There were numerous causes and effects of the Great Depression. It was a divergent distribution of wealth. The nation’s wealth increased extremely but they did not distribute it evenly. The economy didn’t have any way of paying the money back. It created a financial crisis when Europe couldn’t purchase goods from the United States. It was mandatory for Germany to pay for World War I due to the Treaty of Versailles. This debt made the United States pass the Forney-McCumber Act which created high tariffs. There were a variety of reasons as to why the Great Depression started.
The Great Depression was the longest American slump in the economy to ever occur. The Great Depression lasted for about a decade between 1929 and 1939, the dates of the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the starting of World War II. A number of factors actually caused the Great Depression. One commonly known factor said to have caused the Great Depression is the Stock Market Crash of 1929, although this is not directly correct. The market crash was only a symptom of, as well as a transition into, the Great Depression. Other symptoms and causes includes, wealth inequality, overproduction, stock speculation, excess loaning, deflation, unemployment, and no profits.
Most Americans began to live a better life from 1922-1929 otherwise known as the seven fat years. This was due to the government’s relaxed approach towards the economy. The laissez-faire system was encouraged because there was little intervention from the state. Businessmen didn’t have to listen to government they could make their own decisions in order to produce profit and wealth. Government’s approach was pro-industry and anti-labour which meant that there was no protection for the workers thus leading to inequality, long working hours and not a enough pay for the workers to really feel happy or satisfied. Powerful monopolies were able to grow unchecked. Although the laissez is a reason for the crash it isn’t the only one reason. It can be argued that the economic isolationism, loans to Germany and other countries and unequal wealth and income etc. were the causes of the crash because America had many more influences than government not intervening and they were involved with a lot of things and people and would come out on the other side biting more than they could chew during the depression.
On an October morning, the United States woke up and realized that the stock market had crashed. Everyone was shocked and confused. The people lost most if not all of their possessions. The Great Depression was during the 1930s and made people do, think, and feel in many ways they hadn’t. They had to conserve what they had and most of the time it was nothing. They felt sad, scared, and confused in a different way. It wasn’t just the people it was the government, the police, the authority, and even the other neighboring countries of the United States. According to Maury Klein in Rainbow’s End she says, “Black Thursday, 1929. The market opened, said one broker, ‘Like a bolt out of hell.’ The dreaded tsunami of selling crashed down at once. Never had so many orders poured in so fast from so many places; 1.6 million shares changed hands in the first half hour alone and the pace never slowed. No sooner was a phone hung up than it rang again.” The rich became poor. The poor became poorer. The people with money were scared to share it thinking they might lose all of it. No one trusted anyone except themselves and their family. Money is the key to survival in this world. But during that time the people were poor. They didn’t have money, so how did they survive?
The Great Depression was due to the stock market crashing and the fear of risking what was left and decided to but a pause on any economic activity. Throughout this time period we elected two Presidents, Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Throughout the Depression Roosevelt had the most effective policies than Hoover.

When the stock market started failing many factories closed production of all types of good. Businesses and banks started closing down and farmers fell into bankruptcy. Many people lost everything, their jobs, their savings, and homes. More than thirteen million people were unemployed.
