Ready-Made Clothing

As time passes, new technology and procedures are invented. Humans have gone from invented ideas to reimagining those inventions into something greater and clothing style has also evolved in the same way. These developments also brought with it benefit, comfort, and fashion. The past helped develop style and formation of clothing. Styles have significantly changed through the various time periods, but without all these innovations in the past, style and clothing wouldn't be where it is today. For much of history clothing was made by tailors. Before ready- made clothing, people would have their clothes made by tailors, or family members. Fashion during the Renaissance was a status symbol that show a persons wealth and social rank based on the elegance of their clothing and material it was made from. Fitted styles, buttons, zippers, corsets, and embroidery were all used by the upper class. These demands lead to needing a large amount of tailors. Those in lower and middle class had clothing that were “considered very oversized by modern standards.” Each culture had some rendition of a robe draped and tied around their bodies with a belt, pin or sash. It wasn't until the American Civil War when ready- made clothing was used by men. This event was crucial in the evolution of ready- made clothing. Most uniforms were custom- made in their homes under government contract, but as the war progressed, factories were built to meet the demands of the military. They were a cheap , and simple alternative to making the uniforms . Factories mass- producing these uniforms needed to have a standard size.
