Raphael was born on April 6 1483 in Urbino, Italy. Urbino was a cultural center that encouraged arts. Raphael’s father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter for the Duke of Urbino. Giovanni taught Raphael basic painting techniques and the principles at the Duke of Urbino court. Giovanni died when Raphael was just 11 years old. He took over his father’s workshop and it became his own. Raphael was known as the most famous painter in town. When he was a teenager he was positioned to paint for the Church of Nicola in Castello. In 1500, Perugino, another famous painter invited Raphael to be his apprentice in Pergina. In Perugia, Perugino was working on frescoes at the Collegio del Cambia. This experience lasted for four years and Raphael learned more knowledge and hands-on experiences. During this period, Raphael developed his own unique painting style.

He was celebreated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings. He was very productive in his life, but had an early death at the age of thirty-seven years old, letting his rival Michelangelo take the reins on the art world. He is one of the great masters of his time. He died on March 28 of 1483 at the age of thirty-seven years old.
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6th 1475. His family was politically prominent as his family had large land property. His father was a banker and was looking to his son to engage in his businesses. As a young boy, he has ambitions of becoming a sculptor, but his father was very discouraging of this. Despite the nature, origins and even existence of the Renaissance being subject to intensive investigation by many historians, the traditional understanding of the European renaissance as being defined as the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern era has resonated in society throughout time. Exemplified through the influx of creative arts, literature and philosophy of that time, Swiss cultural historian Jacob Burckhardt defined this bridge as being the result of an immense intellectual transformation in humanity. In fact, the term ‘renaissance’, coined by the French historian Jules Michelet, can be translated to mean ‘new birth’ or ‘rebirth’. Spanning roughly through the 14th to 17th centuries, the renaissance is often recognised as the time of a revolution of cultural revitalization and exploration. These traditionalist ideas of the Renaissance as developed by Michelet and later expanded by Burckhardt were however ultimately disposed by revisionist historians like Charles Homer Haskins who began a revolt against Renaissance idea, motivated by the goal to deny the era any legitimate historical existence and annex the period to the middle ages. However, the perspectives of these historians in this debate are ultimately a reflection of their own context and purposes. Both Michelet and Burckhardt’s approach reflect their own 19th-century world, whilst Haskins was heavily influenced by his liberal, optimistic 20th-century ideals. Raphael’s father worked as a court painter under the Duke of Urbino. Raphael often helped his father paint some paintings for the court. Being around and growing up around the court as much as he did, Raphael was introduced to practicing proper manners and to new social skills. His mother passed away when he was eight years old and even though his father remarried, he passed away four years later. The passing of Raphael’s parents left him orphaned and living with his uncle, who was a priest. While living with his uncle, Raphael showed the talent that he had learned while helping his father at the Duke’s court. Around the age of fifteen or sixteen, Raphael did a self-portrait, which is the earliest known example of his work (Raphael Sanzio, 2012).
