The main theme of the essay is how rap music has negatively affected our youth. I agree with this because rap which once represented the voice of the powerless and the forgotten and was used to inspire people to reach for greatness, has transformed into something ruthless. Modern rap music lyrics have become increasingly explicit as top rappers promote violence, substance abuse, and misogyny. The first reason I agree that rap music has negatively affected our youth is because most rap songs glorify criminal behavior and street violence. In today’s culture where rap music has become increasingly popular, many teens aren’t realizing what they are listening to. A lot of teens would argue that the music they listen to has no effect on them, but they are wrong. Modern rap music has a major negative impact on teenagers because of its use of explicit language. The majority of rap music uses themes such as women are nothing more than “bitches” and “hoes”, disposable sexual objects that merely exist for men’s abusive delight. This can be seen in typical rap music videos, which usually contains naked women dancing for the rapper. The reason these trends started in rap is because most rappers are males. When asked to identify a famous female rapper, most teenagers can’t come up with anything more than Nicki Minaj. Most rap music with lyrics that glorify rape and disrespect towards women and authority can impact our youth in a very negative way as it teaches young men to treat women with less respect and even teaches young women to respect themselves less. When our youth listens to this music at a young age, it embeds these things into their minds and causes them to think of it as acceptable behavior when in reality it is
