Racism is still present in many societies, although many people are doing their best to put an end to racism and its somewhat tragic ordeals. Though racism is a controversial subject, many other subjects have received just as much controversy. One of these is discrimination. Discrimination is the denial of equality based on personal characteristics, such as race and color. Racial jokes and ethnic slurs are obvious examples of racial discrimination.
Unfortunately, many of these behaviors that they adopt make it much more difficult for them to become a part of the larger culture. Functionalism also establishes that self-segregation can be beneficial for minorities because it unites them and creates a sense of community. This however, can also be dysfunctional when society minimizes the amoun... ... middle of paper ... ...el expresses the causes of racism the best is Symbolic Interactionism. I see in society all the time that people make racist jokes and such that try to make the idea of racism not as serious. I think that many people lack an understanding of the issue so therefore they begin to participate in racial tendencies without being fully aware of it.
I will base information from Webster’s definition of Racism, reading assigned for the course, and some of my own ideas on ways to overcome this obstacle as a nation. Racism has historically been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. Sometimes racism means beliefs, practices, and institutions that discriminate against people based on their perceived or ascribed race. While the sin of racism is an age-old phenomenon based on ignorance, fear, estrangement, and false pride, some of its ugliest manifestations have taken place in our time. Racism and irrational prejudices operate in a vicious circle.
Stereotype has always been a major situation among racial society, since the 1960’s all the way till today. Stereotype has been used as a separation among other racial ethnicities. Racial stereotyping has actually made humans believe how other’s actions are really supposed to be, and how they should be treated. However, some people from the racial stereotyping societies had disapproved this discrimination and had fought for their rights; because they believed that all humans are equal and must converge together as a unity of equality. Every person has his or her own different mind perspective on stereotyping; that can lead him or her to major consequences or moral lessons.
Racism is more common than you would think and it isn’t easy to change the minds of millions(Racism). Obvious racism, such as segregation, is definitely in the past. It is illegal, of course. But maybe the discrete acts do more damage. This is possible because those who seem sincere may secretly be racist, and this behavior can deeply hurt someone.
Some people are used to being a part of racial actions without knowing they are involved, either because they were raised that Therefore, Race and Racism have a lot to do with societies. Societies are what are bringing to life race and racism. The viewing of races in the world was made up by people to assign certain groups higher status than others. In keeping views like this alive in the world we are making those races that are seen as inferior, have no chance of bettering their status. We know that there are no biological factors making one race better than another.
Racism is a repulsive issue that is becoming more and more evident to the people living in America. It is not something that is taken lightly in society today, and it can be extremely offensive to many. Even though everyone reacts differently to it, it is important for all people to make an honest effort to respect others regardless of their racial and ethnic backgrounds. People must change their stereotypical thoughts about others and help decrease or end racism by addressing any issues in which racism is concerned. Results in response to different approaches to confront the situation have occurred, but it still remains very real within our world today.
In society there is a lot of misconception of the term racism. According to the merriam-webster dictionary members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of others race which many people would agree with. What is racism? The normal person if asked will simply reply, not liking someone for their color of their skin. Racism from my attitude which is substantiated by historically events is a system of power .Thus is a system of power i.e.
Racism will continue to be an issue in America, as it is continuously brushed beneath the surface of civilization. When turning on the news, it is very common to hear about deaths, crimes, and other tragedies. However, one issue that American society fails to accept is that racism still occurs and does not receive the punishments it deserves.
Racism as defined by Encyclopedia Britannica as “the ideology that humans are divided into separate entities called races and that some races are innately superior to others” is one of the world’s major issues and we cannot deny the fact that it still persists in the modern world. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in today’s society. Some people thinks of it is a way of life. Others think of it it as an offensive expression that shows closed-mindedness. Racism comes from different ethnicity, cultural morals, beliefs, and the physical appearances.
