Capital punishment is feared by potential murderers because once it is ordered on them they are not coming back. When those potential murderers are deterred away form murder, those are innocent lives that are saved. Further, if we get rid of capital punishment we will just be showing criminals that they can get away with murder, and be punished that severely.
“If murderers are sentenced to death and executed, potential murderers will think twice before killing for fear of losing their own life” (“Prevents”). Although some may think that the death penalty is harsh, “capital punishment is likely to deter more than any other imprisonments because people fear death more than anything else” (“Prevents”). The death penalty is the best form of punishment for those convicted of murder, but it is flawed in many aspects. Part of the problem is that “the laws today are too lenient” (Burgado). This statement couldn’t be more true; there are many murderers that are serving life sentences or are free because the laws aren’t strict enough.
Most criminals would think twice before committing murder if they knew their own lives were at stake. Use of the death penalty as intended by law could actually reduce the number of violent murders by eliminating some of the repeat offenders. The death penalty has always been and continues to be a very controversial issue. People on both sides of the issue argue endlessly to gain further support for their movements. While opponents of capital punishment are quick to point out that the United States remains one of the few Western countries that continue to support the death penalty.
There is also a probability that you think that you will give families of victims’ closure. On the hand, it costs more to execute a person than it is to keep people alive in prison. In comparison, it is just another way to get revenge and will just create a cycle of hatred. Additionally, the death penalty is filled with flaws. There are chances that the system might convict an innocent citizen.
Some may argue though that such like criminals do not have stable emotions or a state of mind. This would work against the argument that it prevents potential crimes, because they are principally planning or able to carry out their crime. The Death Penalty is a fear based incentive to attempt to eliminate all horrific crimes from happening. This form of punishment is completely understandable for these types of criminals. The death sentence is only condemned to those who commit first degree murder.
Black-on-black crimes is less likely to receive a death sentence, followed by crimes by other defendants, regardless of the race of their victims.” It is important to note that in these cases, race may more easily become the deciding factor in who lives and who dies. Capital punishment can be a difficult topic to approach because people tend to have extreme views on it. The death penalty is an asset to society. It can stop/deter potential criminals as well as serves retribution to criminals. I believe that the death penalty can be used as a useful tool in sentencing criminals that have committed some of the worst crimes known to man.
Some countries have legalized the death penalty as punishment for crimes committed, but how can it be effective? Killing is not justice! The justice system may call it capital punishment but how can one be punished if they are dead? Having the death penalty will not make the crime rates decrease. America as well as every other country will still experience murders, rape, robbery, kidnapping, etc.
The predominant school of thought in the American populace lies with the vigorous acceptance for the execution of murderers. While the majority of Americans tend to believe in the inherent right of the state to exact capital punishment on suspected murderers, an increasing opposition to the death penalty can be seen both within the US and globally. The supporters believe that by killing the criminals, the country can be a safer place at the same time as discouraging future criminals. But, as facts continue to prove, enforcing the death row has little to no effect in the deterrence of criminals and instead, can leave innocent people hanging from a noose. The whole system of capital punishment is visibly flawed as its ability to execute the real criminals based upon DNA evidence continues to fail.
The death penalty is very controversial nationwide. However, we believe the death penalty is the only way to deter crime. Unlike the lethal injection, electrocution, firing squad, and gas chamber, hanging is more painful; therefore, using hanging as a death penalty puts more fear into murderers (Death Penalty Information Center). “Although you will never deter all murderers, the effect of deterrence will rise as the probability of executions rise” (Sharp “Death Penalty Paper”). Whenever death penalties are used as a punishment, the percentage of murders committed declines.
The death penalty is not the most effective form of punishment for criminals. The death penalty is hypocritical; it condemns killing by killing people. Many supporters of capital punishment cite retribution as being a justification for the death penalty; however, no matter what the circumstance, murder is never justified. Ghandi once said “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” Two wrongs can never make a right. Capital punishment should be abolished because while even though many supporters of the death penalty claim that it prevents crime, there is no evidence that it has been proven to do so.
