President-elect Trump holds onto many ideals that conflict with what the average citizen believes to be fair and just. Henry David Thoreau believes that citizens have the right to act against a leader that they feel serves as an injustice to the good of a group, in this case, their nation. Henry David Thoreau would likely disagree with a great deal of the things that the president-elect sets out to do and would encourage citizens to rebel in a manner of civil disobedience.

Many throughout history shared Thoreau’s opinion, especially those who were on the receiving end of the government’s unjust practices. Thoreau felt that a better government was needed and I would argue, that his words are still relevant today. There is always room for the government to improve. Thoreau wanted a government that didn’t just look to the interests of the powerful majority, one in which individuals with consciences lead, instead of a collective power making decisions for the individuals. The word civil has several definitions. “The one that is intended in this case is "relating to citizens and their interrelations with one another or with the state", and so civil disobedience means "disobedience to the state". Sometimes people assume that civil in this case means "observing accepted social forms; polite" which would make civil disobedience something like polite, orderly disobedience. Although this is an acceptable dictionary definition of the word civil, it is not what is intended here. This misinterpretation is one reason the essay (by Henry David Thoreau that was first published in 1849) is sometimes considered to be an argument for pacifism or for exclusively nonviolent resistance”.
He states that he had not paid a poll tax for over six years and that he even spent time in jail for it; never letting it once crush his motivation. Further, he pities the government because they can’t make him do anything he does not want to do because he is willing to face the physical punishment immediately following. While in jail, he mentions his roommate – an honest and intellectual man – who had been accused of burning down a barn. Thoreau realized his earlier point, that one is better off fighting injustice if they had experienced it first, while in jail and learned the other world which was just beyond the chain-link fences in his own native town. Thoreau doesn’t believe it to be sinful that he often thinks about how men should be instead of accepting who they really are – truly due to the injustices he sees. He doesn’t see politicians as leaders, but as followers to the Constitution, and further, to the men who devised it. Respect for the strides America takes to maintain democracy is established, but the question of whether democracy is really the final step in establishing the near perfect is equally as respected by Thoreau. Civility and disobedience diametrically oppose one another; civility implies politeness or a regard to the status quo while disobedience is a refusal to submit to the standard. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was a philosopher and writer who is well known for his criticism of the American government during the time. During Thoreau’s life, there were two major issues being debated in the United States: slavery and the Mexican-American War. Both issues greatly influenced his essay, as he actually practiced civil disobedience in his own life by refusing to pay taxes in protest of the Mexican War. He states that the government should be based on conscience and that citizens should refuse to follow the law and has the duty not to participate and stay as a member of an unjust institution like the government. I argue that the notion of individualism and skepticism toward government is essential in the basis of many important reform movements in the modern society.
By definition, civil disobedience means to actively refuse to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government or of an occupying power without resorting to physical violence (Wikipedia 2007). Many of the influential people in history have felt passionately about what they believe. These passions caused them to rebel against a government or authority. Many times they felt so strongly about what they believed and how they were being treated was wrong they became disobedient. They would take physical and verbal abuse for being disobedient but would never retaliate. They believed in what they thought was wrong and tried to change the way they were governed. Albert Einstein once said 'never do anything against conscience even if the state demands it.' Albert Einstein's views seem to be reasonable. The claim by Albert Einstein is accurate because people should stand up for what they believe, they should know when they are right and their government is wrong, and they should trust in themselves and their own beliefs.

In "Civil Disobedience," Thoreau criticizes the American government for its democratic nature, namely, the idea of majority ruling. Like earlier transcendentalists, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau believes in the importance of the individual. In a society where there are many individuals with conflicting perceptions and beliefs, Emerson chooses passivity and isolation to avoid conflict with others. However, unlike Emerson, Thoreau rejects passivity and challenges his readers to stand up against the government that focuses on majorities over individuals.
