Why does racism exist? Who created it? In the society we live today, discrimination and racism occur everyday, yet nothing is being done to stop it. Being an Asian-American living in a predominantly white society, I have encountered racial stereotypes directed towards me not just from friends, but strangers as well. Are you good at math? Do you eat rice? These are just a few questions that I have been asked regarding my race and the stereotypes that surround it. According to NY Daily News, within the next 20 years, the population of non-white people living in America will make up about 50% of the total U.S population. If that’s gonna be a reality, why can’t we all accept one another’s differences, values, and cultures? Just because people of color possess customs, traits, or cultural beliefs that differ from those who are white, why do they have to become targets of racism and hatred? That’s the way society has become and racism is just a way for one group of people to inflict hate on another group of people, solely because they share distinct beliefs and customs and have a different skin color.

In “White Privilege II”, one of Macklemore’s songs that discuss about racism in America, he asks. “What are you willing to sacrifice to create a more just society?”, a question directed towards white people specifically. In other words, white people should be asking themselves, what can I do to help establish a racist-free society? White people should have a duty to treat everyone with respect and equality, considering how diverse of a country America is and how important people of color are to sustaining America’s economy and public image.
