Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck illustrates many morals in the novel. This novel supports many themes. The characters make up most of messages in the novel. Some examples are the predatory nature of human existence, the bonds between men, the impossibility of the american dream, and the destructive imbalance of social power structures in american society. The themes of predatory nature and the bonds between two men are important to the novella ”Of Mice and Men” because of when Curley got into a fight with Lennie, when George would be mean to Lennie, and when Crooks was also being mean to Lennie. Near the middle of the novel curley got into a fight with Lennie which lead to many actions. These actions are what lead up to the themes. “Lennie looked helplessly at George, and then he got up and tried to retreat.” (pg 31) Curley came into the house very mad so he thought it would be ok to pick on someone. Crooks is not familiar to people talking or hanging out with him. So he thought it would be ok to be mean to Lennie and it made Lennie very upset. Then Crooks realized Lennie was just trying to be friendly and he let Lennie stay and chat with him. “Lennie smiled helplessly in an attempt to make friends. Crooks said sharply, “You got no right to come in my room. This here’s my room. Nobody got any right in here but me.” Crooks realized it would be nice to talk to someone.
In conclusion, the themes of predatory nature and the bonds between two men are important to the novella ”Of Mice and Men” because of when Curley got into a fight with Lennie, when George would be mean to Lennie, and when Crooks was also being mean to Lennie. There was a lot of great scenes in the novel. It seems that in this novella there is a lot of antagonists and only one main protagonists who is Lennie. There is so many themes that you could get out of this. This novella is definitely a good
