When should power tilt and recline be prescribed? There are many reasons why a user would need power tilt and recline to be prescribed. Some of the most important considerations that need to be taken into account are: • Is the user able to shift weight on his own? • Does the user have a healthy skin without pressure injury risk? • Is the user able to maintain a stable posture? • Does the user function as well as he could? If those questions are answered as “no”, tilt and/or recline may need to be prescribed. Which problems could help tilt with? Let’s focus on some criteria in which the use of tilt could assist: pressure redistribution, position changes and function, and function of body systems. Pressure redistribution While sitting upright, the body weight is entirely supported by our buttocks, thighs and feet. At the same time, our trunk is definitely bearing with a minimum amount of weight. This is a problem when that weight comprises the skin and tissues, increasing the risk of injuries. The solution? Tilting the person back will redistribute the weight to the trunk, taking pressure off the buttocks, thus reducing the risk of skin breakdown. …show more content…

Position changes & function When the user cannot maintain the pelvis, the trunk and/or the head upright for long periods, tilt can assist in: • Improving postural alignment. Due to the effects of gravity, postural deviations can occur and tilt helps decreasing the potential for having them. Having a proper postural alignment also makes fatigue to decrease, improving function. • When already having a postural deformity as a fixed kyphosis, tilt improves visual field and speech, and encourages the completion of activities of daily living. • As tilt helps with pressure relief and with keeping a proper posture, it aids increasing the sitting
