Roman Catholic Church The Roman Catholic church is also known as the Catholic Church. It is one of the oldest religious institutions in the world. It has around 1.3 billion members worldwide making it the world’s largest Christian church. The traditional Catholic’s beliefs are that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was born around 6 B.C. in Bethlehem. His early life is not known very well but the later part of his life is known very well and is recorded in the New Testament in the bible. “Jesus is considered the incarnation of God and his teachings are followed as an example for living a more spiritual life. Christians, believe he died for the sins of all people and rose from the dead. (Jesus Christ)” There are around 1.3 Billion people who are a part of the Roman Catholic Religion. About 7% of all catholic people live in the United States. About 25% of the people in the United States are Catholic. The Catholic population in the United States has been influenced heavily by immigration of Latinos. More than 52% of all migrants to the United States are Catholic. “In 2010 there were around 75 million Catholics living in the United States. The church still thinks that it is a sin because it says it in the bible but they are still children of god and should be treated the same. For a person who is having homosexual thoughts it is not a sin. For a person to sin they must carry out the act because thinking about it is not the same. The church does not believe in any pre-marital sexual activity because they say it is sinful and immoral. The catholic church says that marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman and is permanent. They do not believe in gay marriage so it is a sin. The Catholic church does not allow openly gay ministers to be
We can see the birth of Jesus in Matthew (Matt 1:18-25) (Matt 2:1-12), Luke (Luke 2:1-2) and John (John1:1-18). Both Matthew and Luke tell us that Jesus’ birth place was in Bethlehem in Judea in the time of King Herod of Judea and Emperor Augustine of the Roman Empire. The gospels tell us that Jesus was born in a stable under an inn (Luke 2:7). This is unlikely because Bethlehem was the birthplace of David, who was Joseph’s ancestor. This means that there may have been a house with his cousins or extended family there. The Hebrew word for inn can also be described as ‘the upper room’ and in traditional Jewish houses, there was an upper room where the family stayed and underneath this was the place where the animals were kept. This could have been seen as the stable under the ‘inn’. Now because of the census performed by Emperor Augustine the Jews had to travel to their ancestral home that meant that the house Mary and Joseph were staying at could have been full, so the upper room was full, making the only available room for the baby to be born in the stable below. Jesus was thought to be traditionally born in 1AD after the Monk Dionysus Exigus tried to calculate the year, from the Birth of Jesus, by taking away the reigns of Kings. Unfortunately Exigus made a few errors and Jesus is now thought to be born a few years BC. We know that in Matt 2:1 and Matt2:16 (Luke 1:55) that King Herod the Great was the ruler of Judea. From Roman records we know that King Herod died in 4BC near the feast of the Passover. This means that the earliest time Jesus could have been born was early 4BC. Herod plays an integral part in determining Jesus birth date because it also could explain the Bethlehem Star, which we...
“About 270,000 religious congregations in the US have combined annual revenue of $80 billion. Slightly more than 50 percent of Americans belong to a religious congregation. In terms of membership, the largest faiths in the US are Catholic (about 25 percent of the population); Baptist (16 percent); Methodist (7 percent); Lutheran (5 percent); Presbyterian (3 percent); Pentecostal (2 percent); and Episcopalian (2 percent). Church membership statistics are notoriously unreliable.”(Hoover’s 2008)
For years the Catholic church has not accepted the idea of homosexuality in the church, not until recently has the Vatican and many other Catholic denominations accepted homosexuality. In this quote from Pope Francis he explains that only God is to judge someone on the kind of person they are not on their sexual orientation. “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge? We shouldn't marginalise people for this. They must be integrated into society.” (Pope Francis) Just this quote is a huge leap forward for the Catholic church and their modernization.
A look at the historical life of Jesus Christ reveals that he was born to the Virgin Mary and his father Joseph in the year 6 B.C.E. His birth occurred during the Judean reign of King Herod. (Fisher, 2006) There isn't a lot of written history concerning Jesus' early years up to the age of about 24 years old. Jesus was a simple carpenter who was known for his fierce devotion to the Lord. He began to preach publicly at the age of 25 or so. (Fisher, 2006) This time during his life was a very successful one, he was adapt at healing the sickly and exercising demons. On a pilgrimage to Nazareth, Jesus was said to have been baptized by John, who later became one of Jesus' Apostles. This occurrence marked the beginning of Jesus' public life and rose his preaching to a higher level of interest among both his followers and his detractors. (Maas, 2003) Shortly prior to the first Passover of his life Jesus entered the Temple in Jerusalem and abruptly cast out the buyers and merchants who had been accustomed to buying and selling their wares in the holy Temple for a long time. The death, and the eventual resurrection of Jesus Christ which happened on the day after the Last Supper, was a major point in the Christian religion. Both occurrences had major impacts on the religion, while Jesus' resurrection is looked at as the most memorable historical event in the religious theatre.
Sexual abuse is a growing concern in society today. So many people are hurt by the actions of other people when they abuse them, especially in a sexual manner. The Catholic Church is also now being targeted for sexual offenders. Priests have been charged with sexually abusing young boys that are involved with the church. The church has been looking the other way on this issue for many years. The children as well as their family are being hurt and its time something was done to prevent the further exploitation of young boys in the Catholic Church.
Religion has been a big issue with judging homosexual. Some Christians believe that the Bible speaks with one clear voice in condemning homosexuality. In many Anti-gay Christians groups see homosexuality as sinful. Using the Bible to justify their hate against anything they do not understand.
Jesus’ life was ministry and death. Much of the early life of Jesus Christ is a mystery. The preponderance of information on or about his life is found in the four gospels of the New Testament. Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary in the year “0” B.C. near the town of Bethlehem in a manger outside an inn. This humble beginning was the foreshadowing of a life of humility and service.
The founder of this religion is Jesus Christ. The way Catholics perceive their belief on this religion is also extraordinary, Catholics is one of the most powerful religions that have more followers than any other Religion. They believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Son of the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is idolized in The Catholic Church. They believe that God sent Jesus Christ to die for their Sins. The book that the Catholics use is The New Testament also known as The Holy Bible. They use this book on the Holy Day, which is Sunday. On the Holy Day, they get dressed up in Sundays best and go to Mass. Mass is one hour and in that hour they sing along to hymns, receive sacred food such as bread and wine, and have a priest giving advice on how to live a sacred life. Catholics meet together outside of Church in their own time to spread their love to God and other people. An example would be the Youth Group, they invite teenagers to come and hear what kids their own age have to say about their savior. Catholics also have retreats for Teens, Women and Men. These retreats help them become closer to God and their community. The people that go to the retreat also help spread the Gospel once they are finished attending their three day retreat. If they have completed a retreat they have the privilege to work on teams. Not many information is available because what they do is sacred and a surprise for incoming
Every Sunday at six in the morning in my entire life I was always told to believe that the church is one, holy, catholic [universal], and apostolic. One of the traditional beliefs that was passed down to me from the church and my family, is that I must serve and love GOD from Jesus Christ to gain access to heaven. Catholics believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who teaches us through the word of the Church, which is why am always accompanied by my family to attend church. the entire right side of the church is occupied by my extended family. My family and I follow Gods ten commandments, especially to “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:5) and “You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:18). And then there’s the views of Homosexuality, the church “The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage and the social acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex relationships, but teaches that homosexual persons deserve respect, justice and pastoral care” (http://www.americancatholic.org/News/Homosexuality/default.asp). Because am catholic, my views on gays is that is wrong, which is why my sexual orientation is heterosexual. In high school, I had two friends that were gay. I remember thinking how wrong it was because "marriage
According to the book of Matthew, “Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,” indicating he was born between 6 and 4 BCE (Matthew 2:1). The Bible refers to this as the virgin birth because Joseph and Mary never conceived him. He was a human being in which God took his form. Very little is known about his childhood and the Bible only reveals a picture of Jesus and his teachings when he was approximately 30 years of age. Whatever happened to Jesus during these years is a mystery to us all, but whatever happened transformed him into the divine being which he is today.
Jesus is said to have been born around 4-6 BC. When Jesus was 30 he began his ministry. Many of the reasons that his religion succeeded were that it treated everyone equally promised eternal life and was centered on on your personal relationship with God. Jesus¹ teachings included love for God, neighbors, enemies and yourself. The ten commandments and the basic foundation of Judaism was included in his teachings as Jesus was born a Jew.
The Catholic Church’s corruption during the late Middle Ages further enabled church reforms due to the ever-increasing view of the loss of credibility within the church by both the laity and clergy. Thus implementing the ideas of reform. Martin Luther is considered the father of the reformation where he instigated the challenging for the church, papal authority, and changed how the people were allowed to worship. Carlstadt and Zwingli, much like Luther, practiced Evangelical traditions, however, they expanded further than Luther in regards to doctrine and practice. John Calvin on the other hand challenged some of the Evangelical and Reformed Traditions by various religious changes politically and socially. Lindberg examines the Evangelical
Jesus Christ’s life and mission, which is now present worldwide, is the origin of the Roman Catholicism. Catholics believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who became man, died and rose from the dead to redeem humanity from sin (Catholic Truth Society, 3). He passed his mission of salvation to the Catholic Church through his apostles and then their successors (Catholic Truth Society, 4).
The topic of homosexuality in religion has many sides. There are those who believe that it is a sin in God’s eyes and according to the Bible, and there are those who believe the God and the Bible are not specific to homosexuals. It is a tough debate based on whether you are a religious person, how you were raised, and where your morals and ethics stand. You cannot truly believe one way without taking into account the other side and have valid proof to back it up.
First, Catholics believe in “The Holy Trinity”. The Holy Trinity is a combination of three things. First there is God, the father then Jesus, the son and lastly the Holy Spirit. To the Catholics, God is the being that made us. Jesus is God’s son, who suffered and was buried for the fulfillment of the scriptures. Lastly, The Holy Spirit is the spirit sent down by God to live inside of us. Any one of Catholic faith also goes to a church or a parish. Any follower who goes to a parish or church is called a parishioner. There are many rules to follow when it comes to being Roman Catholic as well. Anyone who is Roman Catholic must abide by the Ten Commandments, which is a list sent down by God for his followers. The list contains commandments that state how wrong things like stealing, gluttony and many more dishonest acts are. There are many other instructions
