Women Fine Artists When we talk about the fine arts, we automatically think of great artists like Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and so forth. However, none of these great fine artists are female. Yes, there are a couple of famous female artists throughout history such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, and Frida Kahlo, but they do not amount to the same number or fame as male artists. Today, many aspiring fine artists are female, but the times for them to shine has barely begun. Strumwasser further mentions that in order for a woman to reach fame in the art world, she had to go through her father or husband, who had some kind of artist background (65). Female artists are barely making their mark in the art industry compared to men now, because of the long history we have with art- how it was always dominated by male artists. Yes, there are a lot more female artists now than in the past, but not all of them are written down in art history books. This is because women artists simply lack the exposure they need to even be considered a professional artist. Strangely enough, some male artists find female ones to be inferior to them in the fine arts. Furthermore, there are these aged-old male artists, like George Baselitz who ridicule women of painting- believing that “women don’t paint very well.” If we trace back to the history of fine arts and women, we can see that the problem female artists face today with exposure in the art industry, lies within in roots. It has only been a couple of centuries, but I believe that the art world is slowly changing and evolving for the better for women artists.
