In this essay, I am going to explain the differences between the movie « Beowulf Director's Cut » and the original poem of Beowulf. There were a lot of things which were not the same but I am only going to pick three differences between the two.
First of all, in the original story, Grendel's rule in Herot last for twelve winters contrary to the movie. Indeed, in the movie, Beowulf comes to Herot almost instantly after the first attack of Grendel. Furthermore, Grendel makes a lot of attacks but he only does one before that Beowulf arrives.

The battle with Grendel’s mother differ from the battle with Grendel because when Beowulf fought with Grendel he used no weapon “my hands alone should fight for me” line 174. On the day of the battle, when Grendel saw Beowulf he was scared for the first time “ Grendel's one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there.” line 278 But when Beowulf fought with Grendel’s mother, at the beginning Beowulf was fighting for his live “ For the first time in years of being worn to war it would earn no glory” line 484 Beowulf was losing , she was to fast and “no sword could slice her evil skin.” He needed his weapons fight for him, and Grendel’s mother was not scared of his strength as Grendel
Do people ever talk about superheroes, and monsters? Especially people into comic books and children. Every child, even adults, have a superhero they look up to, or a role model they want to grow up to be like. Superheroes are everywhere from movies to books. Children even sit in their room playing with toy superheroes, hoping one day they can be just like them. Even hundreds of thousands of years ago there were superheroes! A long time ago in the Anglo-Saxon Period there was a brave and loyal hero! His name was Beowulf, and everyone looked up to him. This hero definitely brought peace to many people, and if it wasn’t for the mighty hero Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxons would have been terrorized forever. Therefore, the times were hard before Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon warriors always stood for three values, and the time was changed without monsters.
There are numerous similitudes and contrasts between Beowulf the motion picture which was made in the year 2007, and the poem by an obscure Angelo Saxon poet. A large portion of the likenesses and contrasts are clear. The poem was changed into a motion picture and was more advanced and simpler to see then the epic poem itself. The movie happens to be more modern and gives the audience a better understanding of Beowulf and what happened during his life. It also helps the audience visualize it rather than having to picture the occurences while reading the poem.

When he accepts his first challenge in the poem, Grendel, a big and powerful creature with claws, had been tormenting Herot for “twelve winters” (Beowulf 62). Later, Hrothgar approaches Beowulf to inform him that the “only help, again, lies with [him]” and to “save [them] once more” from Grendel’s revenge-filled Mother (443-44; 446-47). In these moments, Beowulf embraces the role of being the ultimate hope to not just the Danes, but his fellow Geat brethren as well. After fifty years of ruling the Geats, he is once again put in a position of being their only hope when a big, powerful fire breathing “dragon begins terrorizing [them]” (62). Beowulf succeeded in stopping the dragon’s attacks at the cost of his own life. However, his mission was fulfilled. The Geats had been saved and proceeded to finish the final wishes of their fallen king.

When showing a movie that is based on a piece of literature to high school students, the person showing the movie should take in consideration of several aspects that affect the student. If the movie does more harm than good, it should not be shown for the good of the student. These aspects must be acknowledged especially when deciding if the 2007 movie version of Beowulf is acceptable to show to East Juniata high school seniors. Mr. Benner should not show this to the high school seniors because it does not follow the plot line as close as possible, parts of the movie can disgust some of the students, and it is possible that the movie could deride the actual poem.
The second encounter occurs when Grendel’s mother comes to avenge her son. While still embodying the quality of evil, she more specifically represents revenge. “His mother moreover, [e]ager and gloomy was anxious to go on [h]er mournful mission, mindful of vengeance [f]or the death of her son” (Beowulf, book 20 lines 26-29.) When Beowulf was swimming down to her lair, Grendel’s mother quickly swam out and attacked him, dragging him deep into her cave. The attack went on for several minutes before Beowulf found a way to successfully defeat the revenge-seeking
In the beginning of the novel, we find that that a mysterious creature attacked Hrothgar, the king of Danes and his army. In response to the situation, Hrothgar decides to call Beowulf who happens to his nephew. In this account of the story Beowulf is the hero to the Danes. He defeats the monster and it's mother. In contrast, in the novel Grendel, Grendel tells the story from his perspective. He describes to the how he wanted to be friends with the humans. In hi attempt to communicate, he is unsuccessful and finds himself being attacked. After trying several more times to befriend the humans, he deices to carry out his plan of being what society ‘wants’ him to be.
"That night, Beowulf and his men stay inside Herot. While his men sleep, Beowulf lies awake, eager to meet with Grendel" (Raffel Burton- 48). In the epic, Beowulf establishes himself as a highly profitable warrior, on a mission to serve and protect. Immediately, Beowulf is presumed to be a good force, taking on Grendel who is perceived to be a descendant of Cain, who personifies evil. A valiant warrior, Beowulf protests that he shall take on the monster, stripped of weapons and armor. When the evil monster Grendel attacked the people of Herot, Beowulf chose to fight Grendel and diminish the evil that he represents. While he and his men sleep, Grendel arrives to wreak havoc on the mead-hall.
Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson 2005) depicts a very different protagonist than the one in the epic (Heaney 2000). The Beowulf in the film learns how to have mercy as the movie progresses, while the epic Beowulf is very flat. This is due to the fact that the modern culture is very different from that of the epic. Our culture isn't content with such characters. We want our characters to have more lifelike characteristics such as emotions and a change of heart.
For centuries, children stories have been a valuable tool in teaching lessons and morals. Like most stories that one was read as a child, there lies a life lesson that the author is trying to portray. Whether it was told orally like the story Beowulf or written by an author like Chaucer who wrote The Canterbury Tales, there are life lessons that are being taught through the characters and their challenges that they endure.

Beowulf starts his first battle against Grendel. Grendel is a powerful demon from Cain. He lives in the bottom of a boiling swamp with his mother. He was raised to be a wicked, cruel demon, but does not turn out to be the heinous monster he was taught to be. Grendel lies in the shadows of the soldiers in the mead hall. He watches over them closely, waiting for the perfect time to attack. Grendel, a ruthless, demonic monster, is not what he really seems to be. Instead, Grendel is actually quite a coward. He is feared by many, except Beowulf. Grendel only attacks during the night when the mead hall guards are sound asleep.
