In the poem “To an Athlete Dying Young” they are first talking about how the young athlete defeats his opponents and brings the whole town joy as they carry him on their shoulders through the center of the town. Everyone was cheering for him and so proud to be apart of a town with a champion. But the next stanza shows a big change as they are carrying him in his casket through the town and everyone is quiet as they lay him down at his final resting place.The next stanza says that it was a good thing because he never felt that moment where the glory faded and he was just a regular guy. He won’t see the day he isn’t glorius and will never not be the town hero. He wont understand what its like for the old town heroes who lived beyond the glory
My initial response to the poem was a deep sense of empathy. This indicated to me the way the man’s body was treated after he had passed. I felt sorry for him as the poet created the strong feeling that he had a lonely life. It told us how his body became a part of the land and how he added something to the land around him after he died.

In “Football Dreams” by Jacqueline Woodson, the message that any dream can come true if you put the work in is supported by the structure of the poem. The structural elements that are most impactful are repetition and the title. While she talks about her father’s dreams at the beginning. Later towards the end of the poem, she starts to explain how they came true. “My father dreamed football dreams, and woke up to a scholarship at Ohio State University” (10-12). We can connect on a deep level with our fellow man when we believe that somehow someone else understands us as they relate their own joys and hardships; and perhaps nowhere better is this relationship expressed than in that of the poet and his reader. For the current assignment I had the privilege (and challenge) of writing an imitation of William Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 87". This poem touched a place in my heart because I have actually given this sonnet to someone before as it then communicated my thoughts and feelings far better than I could. Cummings talks about how dying is something to look forward to and how it is inevitable, from the moment we are born, to the fateful day it occurs. I agree with this analysis and the author’s analysis of the poem. Cummings uses his legendary shape style to form “dying is fine) but Death” to show how life begins. Katherine Philip’s “Epitaph,” written in a couplet form, is memorializing her firstborn son who only lived less than six weeks after he was born. In this poem Katherine Philips is desperately trying to renew her faith in life, but she is struggling to do so because of the death of her son. She is attempting to justify the loss of her child, but is also questioning whether there is even a reason for hope. “What on earth deserves our trust?” If you cant trust anything then you have to rely on faith. Even things that we know as certain, like the sun rising in the morning, Katherine seems to not trust, “And so the Sun if it arise…” The “if” implies such a strong sense of doubt that it clearly emphasizes Philip’s struggling attempt to renew her faith in life.
The Theme of Death in Poetry Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson are two Modern American Poets who consistently wrote about the theme of death. While there are some comparisons between the two poets, when it comes to death as a theme, their writing styles were quite different. Robert Frost’s poem, “Home Burial,” and Emily Dickinson’s poems, “I felt a Funeral in my Brain,” and “I died for Beauty,” are three poems concerning death. While the theme is constant there are differences as well as similarities between the poets and their poems. The obvious comparison between the three poems is the theme of death.
The themes of growth and the fallacies associated with old age and death are vital components of the poem. Consisting of seven stanzas of five lines, each containing the syllabic pattern 6-10-6-10, the poem’s rhythm engages the audience and utilises aesthetically pleasing sounds, typical of traditional poetry. In stanza one, Arnold utilises rhetorical questions and visual imagery to depict the clichéd attributes of old age. Through the use of imagery and personification of beauty, the poet begins to construct the stereotypes of old age. In stanza two, through the use of antithesis, as evident in the words “bloom” (2,2) and “decay” (2,2), Arnold juxtaposes youth with old age, suggesting that growth brings with it external and internal physical weaknesses. In stanza three, the poet exclaims that growing old was “not what in youth [he] dreamed ‘twould be!” (3,2) Here, the clichéd assumptions of age and death are epitomised. In the final two lines of the third stanza, Arnold utilises euphemisms to describe death as “a golden day’s decline” (3,5).
