In the poem Sea Calm by Langston Hughes, the author uses patterns of sound and structure to emphasize the stagnant and unsettling nature described in the piece. Because Hughes chose to put simple words in Sea Calm as opposed to his usual slang, the text is very easy to read and understand. It also makes the poem drier and less rhythmic, attributing to stillness of the water the poem meditates on. In the first half, the number of syllables in each line increase by two.
