Do the Supernatural Events in Macbeth Move the Plot Along?
Macbeth one of Shakespeare’s most recognizable play, shows the fall of a man and his sanity. Thought out the play, the sanity of Macbeth has been in question due to the supernatural plot twist that shape the play into what it becomes. The Supernatural plot twists in Macbeth are the three sisters (Witches), the floating dagger and the ghost of Banquo.
The first and the most important supernatural plot twist is the introduction of the three witch sisters. The witches first appear in an empty, open place. (Macbeth: the graphic novel) The witches talk about where, when, and how should they meet. The last thing the witches talk about is who they are meeting, which is Macbeth on the hearth after the battle field. Throughout the play, when the witches enter there is always a crack of thunder. (Macbeth act IV, scene I)
The second appearance of the three witches is at the Scottish heath after the battle. (Macbeth: graphic novel, Macbeth Act I, Scene III, Macbeth 1961 movie) The three witches are there to meet Macbeth and add plot twists to the play. When the witches gather themselves, they hear and see Macbeth and Banquo coming from battle. The first real plot twist in the play is when the witches say one by one ‘All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis” “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!” “All hail, Macbeth! The ghost of Banquo symbolized Macbeth plunge; into a dark deep abyss of tyranny, murder and destruction.
The witches, the dagger, and the ghost of Banquo symbolized and molded the tragic play of Macbeth in to what it is. The witches tricked Macbeth with their future seeing and his internal lust for power. The witches tricked Macbeth into believing he was all powerful and invincible, until he was beheaded by Macduff. The dagger symbolized the way Macbeth could kill to get and keep power. The ghost of Banquo symbolized Macbeth's guilt in all of the murders and wrong doing he was done to get and keep those powers.
