What is a leader? In periods of disaster the decisive survival of a group depends on the leader, who steps forward to take control, and maintain order. In today’s society, people are judged based on their appearance, have no stimulus on whether or not a person is capable of being a successful leader. Instead, good governance is based on the individual flairs and traits that the person owns. Piggy from William Golding's “Lord of the Flies” is a perfect sample of a person who may not be the best looking physically, but who has the right qualities to be an excellent leader. Piggy is by far the smartest person in the group, as well as the most patient, and the most sensible. These three traits define him as the best leader, if he was a leader.

Piggy is certainly the most intelligent person in the group. Intelligence is a key feature of a great leader. If a leader is not smart and able to make decent choices, then the group will not survive. Piggy displays his intelligence numerous times throughout the novel. One of which is during the disordered time when the boys have seen the beast. The boys believe that there is the beast located on top of the mountain, making it impossible for them to light the fire. All of the boys, aside from Piggy, give up and figure that they will never be rescued because they couldn’t light the fire. It is only Piggy who remains focused and tries to make suggestions: like moving the fire thru the site. Piggy was the only one who could have the logical daring to suggest moving the fire from the mountain. Ralph, who is the current chief, also depends on Piggy’s intelligence for leadership. ...cause he knows without them the group would not survive. Piggy is a logical intellectual, who unlike the other boys. He remained civilized rather than turning into a savage animal. He is the only one of the boys who is able to make appropriate decisions in the best curiosity of the group.

The leader of the group, which is Ralph, in William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” is responsible for the behavior of the boys. A leader must be able to make good decisions, listen to every member of the group, and maintain a clear mind despite the uncivilized environment, to ensure the well being of everyone. Piggy is the only character that accomplished of doing all of these things because he is smart, patient, and coherent. These qualities are crucial to a good leader, making Piggy the best choice for a leader. Without Piggy as the leader, none will not survive on the island.
