A common tragedy often seen throughout American schools and American society in general is a lack of the understanding of philosophies of economics outside of capitalism. At times capitalism itself can even be misunderstood by the very people living in this society whose gears turn for the machine that is the free market. Knowing and understanding other philosophies than capitalism is crucial. It is more important now than ever for the people to understand what merits and disadvantages different systems of economics provide so that we can change the landscape of the economic world with the needs of the modern individual in mind. Many Americans’ immediate instinct when someone mentions socialism is to criticize it, speaking of the pains of over-taxing the people and how it’s “not their obligation to pay for others”. Socialism is also mistakenly regarded as the same as communism. This shows that many understand neither socialism nor communism for that matter. This is an extremely one-dimensional and frighteningly common interpretation of the fundamentals of socialism. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines socialism as “A system of society or group living in which there is no private property”. This meaning shows that there can be many shades and colors to socialism. Socialism occurs when the resources and means of production are owned by the government. This can happen in many stages. Our own society can be seen as one controlled by some socialist facilities. For example, social security and welfare are taxpayer money redistributed by the government which would be a common sight in a society governed by socialism. Capitalism in its purest unchecked form is avarice. Its values are strictly inhumane and allow the exploitation of persons as a means of profit. There have been many scandalous exploitations of people and non replenishable resources in the past and even present eras of capitalism. Capitalism was a platform and justification for the North American slave trade. Capitalism in its absolution reaps the basic rights of the proletariat in favor of the bourgeois. For this reason, total and absolute anarcho-capitalism is restrained by means of legislation. In the United States particularly, groups such as the FDA regulate products of capitalism. Many other programs are in place to “level the playing field” so to say and to protect the competition of business, effectively preventing monopolies. Capitalism’s synonymous term is the free market. In Socialism Coincides with American Values, Jedediah Purdy produces an interesting insight and argument about the theory of socialism. He believes that socialism can be incredibly beneficial to the United States political and economic systems but are swept aside due to harsh misconceptions of the idealism. He states, “There are essential insights that we lose track of when we let ‘socialism’ be turned into a slur.” Purdy then argues socialism is more American than most Americans want to believe.
Economic systems are affected by the two opposing systems of Capitalism and Communism. They each can meet the needs of people; however, both affect the lives of people in good and bad ways, affecting industrialized nations and nations in the process of being industrialized.
Socialism is a word that has obtained a bad connotation in American society. Politicians are loath to lay claim to it, and often using it to lambast their political opponents with it. Yes in many ways America has seemed to embrace the economic benefits of Capitalism so whole heartedly, thoughts of a tangled bureaucratic mess of welfare and wealth distribution that is so contrary to the American idea of individualism are conjured up at the mere thought of Socialism. In fact many still equate Socialism with Communism and are given to thoughts of the Cold War, and the battle of ideologies that it entailed. When one gets down to the roots of capitalism you find that it is a form of government that allows the rich to get richer, the poor, poorer and the middle class to stay the same. It emerged as technology, production and trade began to increase. During the industrial revolution, capitalism started to influence people more. Some characteristics of capitalism are capital accumulation, competitive markets and wage labor. The government isn’t supposed to interfere with trade. Individual markets raise or lower their prices due to competition and demand for goods. There has been a lot of debate over the usefulness of capitalism. Some believed capitalism had negative effects while others saw more benefits. Adam Smith and Andrew Carnegie pushed for a capitalistic society, but had different beliefs on how economic wealth should be distributed; Karl Marx advocated for a communistic society where wealth was evenly distributed.

Socialism is a social and economic system where the means of productions are shared indivisibly throughout the community or enterprise rather than in the names of a few individuals. Or more simply put Socialists believe that the Chief Executives of a corporation are not the ones who deserve the big pay check. They believe that the working men and women deserve more money because they are they ones out in the field doing the work. The main goal of socialism is to more evenly distribute the wealth. They care more about having more people living comfortably than just a few individuals getting wealthy. Socialist ideas in todays politics are what they believe will make it easier for Americans to live in America.
Marx’s critique of capitalism was written more than a hundred and fifty years ago; however, its value and insight are still extremely relevant to the twenty-first century. In order for us to maintain mixed-market capitalism, ensuring ethics in businesses and stability in growth, all of us need to read and understand Marx’s critique.
While there are certainly arguments against socialism, the arguments against it outweigh. Socialism is better because it allows for the government to provide for the basic needs of all citizens—this is impossible in a market economy, and outweighed by the negative aspects of a command economy. In a time of great national economic and political turmoil, it is important that a consensus be made as to the best economic system for the U.S. and the rest of the world.
