Would you guys ever accept a job where you have to know the basics of being a doctor, a dentist, a psychologist, a friend, a chef, a housekeeper, a janitor, a teacher, a lifeguard and even a finance manager? My mom has always been the type of person to put other people's necessities before hers, especially when it comes to family. I could tell you guys millions of stories of when she chose to put her problems aside, just to help someone out, but there is one time I will never forget. It was my little brother's birthday and it was time to cut the cake. My brother was only 9 so obviously he couldn’t cut the cake himself, so my mom decided helped him. After all the cake was handed out, there was one slice left, her slice. As soon as she put her slice on a plate, my older brother came and said "hey mom is there any cake left"? and guess what my mom did. She gave him her piece as she said "here you can take my piece, I already had some and its way to sweet, so you can have this piece". She is also one of my best friends. I love how she knows when to be a mom and when to be friend. She has helped me out in so many ways, so many different times that I could never count them all. I will never forget the time she literally helped me ask a girl out. And I'm not talking about just some regular advice, no, she went the extra mile and even told me what to wear, what to say, how to ask her out, what to wear, all of that. She even bought a dozen roses and this big piece of construction paper just so I could write something romantic on their just to increase my chances of getting that yes. It was October 6, 1998 when he was lured from the bar that cold, fateful night. His skull was smashed with a pistol butt as he was lashed to a fence, left for dead in near freezing temperatures. Nearly eighteen hours later he was found by passersby and taken to a hospital where he remained in a coma for several days until slowly slipping away. At his funeral, picketers carried signs saying, "God Hates Fags" and "Fags Deserve to Die."
As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
She doesn’t know this, but she changed my life. She was there for me when it seemed like no one else was. When most of my friends were dissolving around me and I just didn’t feel like I could do anything right, she was there, and she made everything seem okay. It didn’t matter that I was inevitably going to graduate with a GPA a tenth of a point lower than I wanted, or that my director told me that he was disappointed in me because I just didn’t seem focused lately, or that my other friends just weren’t talking to me anymore. It didn’t matter because she was there and she made me feel safe. She’s my best friend, and I love her and admire her for so many different reasons.
My mother taught me many great things growing up. As most parents teach and show their children how to be successful in childhood and adult life. I am grateful to have her teach me the many wonderful things she did growing up. During the years as she still teaches and shows me how to do things, one of them has stuck out to me the most. It has been a big help to me through my adulthood. She would sit at the table, drink her diet pepsi, smoke Marlboro red, and talk on the phone. Till this day the table, is her favorite spot to sit whenever she is home. We had a basket that my mom would put all the bills in. I would go get the basket, sit down with her at the table, and that’s when she taught me how to pay the bills. We went over how to write checks, budget the money she already had, when her next paycheck would come, paying bills around her checks schedules, and balance the checkbook. I would practice writing her signature so I could sign the check exactly
We were waiting on a Kidney donor, as well as a liver. On November 22nd, 2015 she passed away at 7 a.m. This was the ultimate experience to never take family ever again. Now i hardly argue with my mom and learn to rely on her much less a and show her much more
She also was on the school board at my grade school, was politically active, and was active in our church. Seeing her stand up to error in public situations gave me the strength to do the same. Sadly, I had to fight error in my high school history class. I disputed my religion teacher's position concerning the civil rights movement (just one of many discussions we had that year). But without Mom's example, I would have been silent like the other kids.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Fifty four years after this speech was made, sadly, equality is still a problem we face. People being judged or treated differently based on their looks. Stereotypes being used to tell what men and women can and can’t do. How can we prevent inequality?
She could explain anything to me and I would understand straight away. She helped a lot for my education and always was there to help. My parents knew that she could teach me and show how hard it is these days and how hard I should work. That is why they always made sure I saw her enough but it never was for me.
The sacrifices made by my mother are ones that I think about often. My mother married my father at age eighteen the summer she graduated high school. Having dreamed of being a doctor for her entire life, she enrolled in her local university with the intention to fulfill that dream. Two years later I was born and she continued to push to towards her goal, making incredible grades all while caring for a baby and husband. However, she decided when I was two that she would drop out of college to take care of me and eventually homeschool. The story doesn't just end there. Several years later she went back to school and earned a degree in Nutrition Science with a seven year old (me), a two year old, and one more on the way. She wrote her final essay in the delivery room of my youngest sister and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, in the top 5% of the country. All of the sacrifices she made and doors she closed led to new goals and opened doors she didn't know existed. Not every parent should drop out of school or make some other major sacrifice, but parent’s must often choose between social events, some designer handbag, or a much needed vacation and the needs of their child. Now, like my mother, I’m a positive thinker, and I am a creative person who believes life is what you create it to be. I also know if I have to make any big decisions in my life, I can always ask my mom for advice because she has the wisdom and experience. I also know that she will tell me the truth even if it is not something that I want to hear, but she will tell me with kindness and without any judgment. All in all, my mother has had a great impact on my life. She encourages me to always grow and blossom into a better person each day of my life. No matter what happens in life, she has taught me to have faith and keep a smile on my face because better days will come. She’s been supportive and makes sure that I continue to prosper. While in school, Mom didn’t have it easy. Not only did she raise a daughter and take care of a husband, she had to deal with numerous setbacks. These included such things as my father suffering a heart attack and going on to have a triple by-pass, she herself went through an emergency surgery, which sat her a semester behind, and her father also suffered a heart attack. Mom not only dealt with these setbacks, but she had the everyday task of things like cooking dinner, cleaning the house and raising a family. I don’t know how she managed it all, but somehow she did.
