Today’s society is still working towards racial equality. When Martin Luther King delivered the famous “I have a Dream “speech his hope was for all men and women of color to have the same civil rights as white people. Although it has been more than fifty years, is this dream a reality? Even though he accomplished for all men to have the same civil rights, do we all have the same right? According to the NY Times fewer than one in three black Americas and not even half of the whites say the United States has made “a lot” of progress to achieving racial equality (Roberts). As a result of harassment from one neighbor they are suing their former neighbor Mr. Roy Turner and the city of Gainesville. As soon as they moved in the Bonds started receiving threats and having racial slurs yelled at them anytime they were outside. For the most part the city is being sued for the racial slurs the Bonds received while Mr. Turner was working. Even though the Bonds made complaints to the city very few steps corrected the situation. During a family gathering Mr. Turner yelled racial slurs, made sounds of an ape and beat on a tree angrily with a baseball bat causing the Bonds to fear him. Following an incident between the two men and Mr. Turner returned to his door pointing a gun and Mr. Bond called the police. Consequently followed with his arrest; he received probation along with the order of no guns and no alcohol consumption. Because of the arrest of Mr. Turner, the city placed him on leave after, only receiving probation, he returned to work. Finally, in October the city fired Mr. Turner from his job after more complaints and disagreements with other employees. In this case is there racial equality and harmony?
