The Issue of Human Trafficking
In today's generation, there are millions of men, women, children who are targeted by human traffickers. Human Trafficking has become a successful form of profit to those committing the crime. Not only is it a global worldwide crime, it is a hidden crime as well. As a country, we are blindsided by these acts of selfishness and greed on innocent victims. The illegal trade and exploitation of humans being forced into labor, prostitution, and favors are considered inhumane acts of human trafficking itself.

Many women and children are targets to this crime. The challenges are a struggle for those being targeted because they feel disempowered, frustrated and stressed out. Under those circumstances, they refuse to say anything due to being maybe, scared. '' Child sex trafficking destroys lives and is a complete affront to any reasonable understanding of human ethics and morality. '' (Human Trafficking 62) ''. Luring men, women, and children to do things unimaginable are not how they are suppose to live or grow as an individual. In the country of Bosnia, it is known for a pimp to spy on young children and threaten to harm their families if he/she refuses to work as a prostitute for them. '' Prostitution, trafficking and pornography are all facts of life, and have been around from time immemorial. '' (70). In fact, many women are deceived by manpower agencies. In Spain, prostitution is a socially accepted factor, that reports claim 39% of Hispanic men have used a prostitute's service at least once. '' To meet this vast demand, an estimated 300,000 prostitutes are currently working in Spain. '' (9). In the end, those who campaign for trafficking victims have been extremely critical of authorities' response to the crime.

Many American citizens know of the criminal act of sex trafficking in third world countries, but very few know how much it takes place in the United States. In America prostitution, pornography, and stripping are all considered acts of sex trafficking when they are forced on the victim. This increased crime has led to victimization, physical and psychological effects and after-effects of American and international victims. The government is aware of the slavery of humans taking place in this country and it has to release funds in creating programs for sex trafficking survivors and re-authorize the act that protects sex trafficking victims, in order to support the equal rights for every citizen.
Country to country, person-to-person, human trafficking is becoming a bigger and bigger issue all across the globe, including right here in the United States. Human trafficking is said to be a form of modern-day slavery, subjecting its victims to commercial sex, debt bondage, and forced labor through force, fraud, or coercion. There are often no easily identifiable victims as they come in all ages, genders, and races. There are said to be at least 2.4 million victims of human trafficking across the globe at any given time, leading to profits of $32 billion for the criminal masterminds behind such trafficking operations, making it the second most lucrative criminal industry behind narcotics. Despite the abundance of victims, it is estimated that fewer than 30% of all countries report at least 10 trafficking convictions a year, and 20% of countries do not even have an offense for trafficking. An additional 20% of countries have an offense for trafficking but still report no convictions of the offense. Without an organized coalition to help prevent such atrocities, it is left up to national governments to come up with solutions for their respective nations, and many governments do not possess the know-how or effort needed to combat these crimes.
The significance of this publication is to promote awareness on the issue of sex trafficking.
In the modern age, “one of the biggest impediments to anti-trafficking efforts is a lack of understanding of the issue“(Jesionka). People need to work together just like they did to end slavery, when everyone sees this as wrong there is nothing that can stop the demise of sex trafficking. In many communities “[people] can turn on the TV now and see pimps glamorized in TV shows, music videos, and movies”(Frundt). In the communities, people see the aspects of sexual trafficking as glamorous and they don’t realise that it is a type of slavery and the girls are miserable. If communities can work together to eliminate this issue, this modern slavery can be eliminated altogether because people won’t allow it to continue in their communities.

There are some common terminologies regarding the determinants that led many young victims into this path; the first one is “love bombing”, this term is coined by many gang members, which infers promises made to young victims for love or better lives, then requiring them to earn money through sex trafficking (Reid, 2014). The second term is “entrapment”, this general term regards to schemes that a pimp or exploiter can use to influence the victims’ emotions in order to force them into perform sexual trafficking (Reid, 2014). A few familiar examples can be: normalizing sex, isolation, flatter or romance, preying on intellectually disabled youths (Reid, 2014), false agencies advertise for modeling opportunity, but often turns out to be abduction traps leading to sex trafficking (Hodge, 2008). The entrapment examples above vary in repetition, some are used often, while others are special cases (Reid, 2014). Another term is “enmeshment”, this term offers an alternative conception for emotional factors being reasons why a child victim would be linked to sex trafficking situations; for examples, loyalty, a sense of obligation, pimps provide hope to return to family, intimidations, or fear of harming loved ones (Reid, 2014). Even though trafficking is a problem in almost every country; poorer countries have a bigger problem with it because they are more desperate for work. Just in 2000, the U.S. enacted their first federal anti-trafficking law, called the Victims of Trafficking Protection Act (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1). Trafficking has just begun to receive notice on how big of a problem it actually is. “Proponents of strict anti-trafficking initiatives say that laws and prevention against trafficking are necessary in order to stem the growing tide of large scale organized crime that profits off of smuggling and trafficking” (At Issue: Human Trafficking 1).
This is an interdisciplinary paper, which focuses on the trafficking of young women and children into prostitution. It starts with a brief description of what is human trafficking and how it works as a business. Then, it focuses on the sex trafficking part of it and how young women and children are more vulnerable to victimization and exploitation. Many victims of human trafficking are under this idea of debt bondage, which is sort of the commitment that victims have with their traffickers. Victims are forced to work until they pay their debt, which most of the time is unpayable. People use these words in a joking manner, but sex trafficking is far from a joke. Everyday, from all different countries, people are bought and sold either by force or false promises. Some are kidnapped and others come to America with dreams of a dream life and job. Human trafficking is a form of slavery, forcing victims to engage in sexual activities and labors against their will. These activities can be taken place through force, fraud, or constraint. Human trafficking is not just affecting one group of people, it is a worldwide issue, affecting all different ages, genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Human trafficking is such an immense problem, apprehending the true size, knowing how to help, and how to keep the issue from reoccurring. In hindsight, many people have no clue and don’t have the slightest idea that human trafficking is even occurring in the entire world, let alone the United States. It is a shame and a shock that this happens right beneath our noses. Even when we are conscientious about human trafficking, we neglect and ignore it. We try to bypass the thought of this huge crime happening in our own country and fail to realize that it happens everyday. Human trafficking is a serious crime that many people are unaware of; it secretly takes place in the United States; it secretly ruins many lives; it secretly goes by to be never discovered or punished by government officials.
Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring.
