I went to the national Aquarium a couple of weeks ago and I had totally forgotten how beautiful the animals and the exhibits are there. I loved every exhibit starting with the sharks and ending with the amazon rain forest exhibit. All the animals and creatures in the aquarium really bring out a different side in me because due to the high technology world we live in, we don’t pay much attention to the nature and its beauty, well at least I don’t pay much attention. When I went the first part that I went to was to see the sharks. It was a magnificent place that really had people paying attention to their every step not to fall into the tank. In the Atlantic predators there was the Largetooth Sawfish that was not a shark but it had a body similar to a shark’s, it was actually a Ray. Its prominent feature is the rostrum, also known as a saw. It can travel very far; its diet is that they eat small fishes, prawns. Their lengths go up to 19.7 ft. and can attain up to 23 feet. These rays are classified as “critically endangered” by the IUCN because they have suffered significant decline...
Among the many things that individuals enjoy doing with their families, visiting amusement parks is at the top of the list. Sea World is a multi-billion dollar chain of marine animal parks, aquariums, and animal theme parks. (Wikipedia) When people are watching the rehearsed performances that the animals and the trainers do, the animals and the trainers seem to be happy. Witnessing the interaction between the animals and the trainers can remind individuals of the beauty of nature and it serves as entertainment.
Perhaps the most visible and obvious structural issue revolves around the aquarium's mission statement and goals. As noted in the case study, the original mission statement "make known the world of water through education, research, and exhibition" concentrates on its goal to bring sea life to the community. The new mission statement saw the aquarium as a "responsive community resource that attracts the broadest possible audience delivering highest quality experience" and as "a culturally diverse staff."
When I was six years old, my parents took me to SeaWorld for the first time. I remember clearly watching the Shamu show and sitting in the splash zone ending up soaked in water by the end. But I also distinctly remember wondering how an animal so big and beautiful could ever be happy in such a small tank, so far away from home. The animals could never possibly experience the joy they would out in the wild where they belonged. And even a six year old wasn’t blind to that fact.
Unless you live right next to the ocean, dolphin and whale sightings are extremely rare. Other animals, such as octopuses, tropical fish, and rays are barely ever seen in the wild. SeaWorld provides a unique experience by allowing us to watch these creatures along with many others and learn about them in an exciting way. For public schools, SeaWorld offers discounted tickets for field trips; the park provides ways for the guests to learn in an interactive way, which differs from a typical classroom setting, where children and adolescents struggle to sit still and listen to a lecture. Throughout every human’s life in the United States, there will portably come a time when they take a trip to an aquarium or zoo. Do not get me wrong; it is incredible to see all those beautiful creatures up close and personal, but most people do not realize what actually is going on. Typically, when the day is spent at the zoo or aquarium, the day usually follows a schedule like this: You spend the day roaming the grounds, moving from habitat to habitat, break for lunch, and then once you’ve seen everything you want to see you return home and are free to do whatever you want to do. I truly enjoyed this museum trip with my family! My first impression as I got out of the parking lot was the massiveness of that place. When I looked around, I saw nothing but huge mountains covered in yellow grass and an eagle flying circles in the sky. The location of this museum was a great choice and definitely attracts many people. As I walked towards the main entrance, I saw an opened huge gate with the fountain and titanic boat inside. I immediately ran inside to take lots of pictures. Then, I walked inside of the museum to purchase the tickets for my family and I.
So the next morning we went to the Aquarium. The Shedd is absolutely huge! We spent about 4 hours looking at the 32,000 different species they had! We went to a water show later that day. The trainers did tricks with dolphins and seals. The man with the seal even had the seal come up out of the water. The seal sat only about five feet away from us! The seal would copy what the man did exactly. If the man would wave, the seal would. If the man would walk, the seal would follow. It was so fun seeing that take place right in front of me!
Well over 181 million people visit zoos and aquariums each year. However, there have been recent reports that reveals that not all zoos and aquariums are the same. For example, Sea World has been under fire for the past several years for unethical practices of capturing and keep their orca whales ever since documentaries like Blackfish (2013) had come out. Zoos have been called out for their unsuitable exhibits for their animals. Even our own Oregon Zoo has been exposed for using concrete grounds for the elephant exhibits which causes extreme pain for the elephants are they weigh so much, stand on the concrete for many hours, and even getting foot disease leading to an early death. The ethical question it raises is, it ethical to keep wild animals in zoos for human viewing pleasure the expense of the animals well being? I used to love fish. Ever since I was a toddler I loved everything fish themed! ‘Rainbow Fish’, by Marcus Pfister, was one of my favorite children’s books and I even had a lot of Rainbow fish themed stuffed animals and toys. “Mom, can you read me Rainbow Fish again?” I said while I layed on my stomach with my face down on the pillow. “Ok Sweetie.”, My mom said with a smile on her face, probably for the 5th time that night. Most Americans have been to a zoo or aquarium at some point in their lives. They spend the whole day outside with their friends and family looking at all the animals from all over the world. For most people, zoos are the only way they will ever be able to see these amazing animals in person. However one animal that lives in zoos across the country may not be there in a couple years.
However, zoos and aquariums reflect responsibility to help and promote animal conservation and protection. Without them, many may have never gotten the chance to see exotic animals such as tigers, elephants, or giraffes up close to examine and learn about their nature. The first zoo in the United States was established in 1874 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia zoo first only had 813 animals but has grown today to have 1,300 animals, still having the same forty-two acres as it did when it first opened. Today there are zoos in almost every major city across the country and even more around the world. But along with zoos, there are marine parks and aquariums. They are a necessity in society because it betters and cultures the population, making the world greater as a whole. I am thankful that museums are taking the initiative to becoming more modernized, adding twenty first century touches to the exhibits as well as creating virtual tours. Even though they do not compare to being there in person, it is a step in the right direction. We need museums more than most know, anything they can do to ensure they do not become a thing of the past, they should. I am glad I got to experience this class this semester, it changed my warped views on museums and caused me to appreciate them more. I am thankful to have learned more about myself through these remarkable museums.
