My hero is my dad Frank Douglas Tratchel he is currently 47 years old. His birthday is March 13, 1968. He currently has three daughters Meaghan Tratchel, Beka Tratchel, and me Sarah Tratchel. My dad has lived in many different places but is originally from Mexico, Missouri. He graduated high school from there and attended college at Jacksonville University, in Florida and later graduated. He later joined the Army and transferred to the Navy. Throughout my life, my dad has had one of the biggest impacts. One of the biggest examples my dad has had on me is being in the Army and Navy. He showed me that you always have to hold your head high even through the tough times. With him being deployed a lot it was hard, but the whole family got through
Coming from a military family, enduring through tough situations was not a foreign concept to me. Living on military bases my whole life around such like-minded people had left me in a mindset that most people also felt the same way. As high school progressed, the number of people I interacted with who had experienced multiple challenges that broke them apart at a young age was astonishing to me. My personal hero would be Inky Johnson. Inky Johnson is my hero because he came out of the projects and showed everyone that no matter what, if you set your mind to something, you can do it. He once said, “See something, believe in it, and go get it.” Inky Johnson grew up in the projects and was very poor. He told his mom when he was little that he was going to make it to the NFL, so they wouldn’t have to work ever again. Inky had a great High School career and was given a scholarship to play football at the University of Tennessee. Inky had made the starting lineup is sophomore year, and by his junior year he was projected to be in the first round of the NFL draft. Inky told his mom that in a couple months all of his struggles will be over.
When I was a young child, my dad was my idol and hero. He seemed to know everything and had the solution to every problem. Any difficulty I had, anything I didn’t understand, my dad had the answer to everything. It seemed like it was every day that he taught me a new valuable life lesson and always had wise advice to share. My dad used to work all day long in Boston and my brother and I would wait by the door to greet him with a crushing hug as soon as he came home. I used to wait eagerly for my dad to come to my room to read me a bedtime story and then tuck me into bed. My dad could do no wrong. He was right about everything and knew how to deal with anything. However, as I grew older, my convictions changed and the image I had of my dad fragmented.
My major influence and inspiration is from my father. He came to America from Syria and persevered to become an anesthesiologist, which is a very stressful job. When he first arrived to the states, he would constantly back and forth between New York and Texas to finish his research and residency. He shared a claustral apartment with four roommates and could only afford minimal food. Daily he struggled so that he could provide for his family and offer them a safe and stable life. At a young age I knew I wanted to be just like my father (who is now a retired Chief in the United States Navy and has served 27 years.) My dad constantly tells me to this day make sure you take care of the ones you work with because their welfare is what really matters. Although you might have to yell at them every once in a while, you can never forget that they will always count on you for everything. From small town Paoli, Indiana, born 40 years ago was the day my biggest hero was born. That amazing person is my mom, Linda Tedrow. She defines my definition of a hero she's the one person in this world that I know will always be there for me and my siblings until her last day no matter what. My definition of a hero is someone who is an inspiration to others, someone who is always there to talk when you need someone, and someone who is always there for you when you hit a bump in the road.

My hero is Mae Jemison. She did everything you could imagine, including traveling to space. I had the chance to meet her and immediately took it. She is my inspiration for so many reasons. When I turned six years old I was old enough to play on a Little League team, and my father volunteered to be the coach. He worked long hours but always found enough time to dedicate to the team. At first our team was not very good, but that would soon change. My father practiced us hard every week and by the end of the season we made the playoffs. Even though we did not win the Championship that year, our team had reason to be proud. We won a few games, and we had a lot of fun, thanks to my dad. I played baseball for a total of ten years, and he was my coach for at least half of them.

My grandfather, from my mother's side of the family, is a wise, nice, caring sixty-year old man. Vocationally, he works as a civil engineer for the state of Indiana. He has taught me so much in this life that I can’t count all the examples he has shown me. Every time I see my father the words that come to my mind are “The biggest example to follow is standing right in front of me.” The way he has provided for this family is the way I would like to provide for mine. For me, it's actually the complete opposite, my father is actually a person who has had felonies in his past. Without a doubt my father has changed his life around, from being a felon to going to jail and preaching to inmates about God. He has showed me the type of man I should be growing up. He is the person who encouraged me into law enforcement. Unfortunately with his record, he isn't able to get a job in law enforcement, but as a kid growing up that was always his dream, he wanted to work for the Border Patrol or DEA. His life experiences such as seeing his brother killed by the Cartel made huge impacts in his life that he knew he wanted to make a difference. But ultimately he did make mistakes that will never allow him to follow his dreams. That’s where I come in, his oldest son that he directs and is always helping me pursue my dream of law enforcement.
