My personal code of chivalry is something I will hold dearly and close to my heart for my whole life. Before my freshman year here at East Noble High School, I had just moved to the Kendallville, Indiana area from 3 hours south. I didn’t know anyone and had to start all new. This is when my values became exceedingly important and I had to stand up for what I knew was right. Moving was particularly tough for me because I was leaving all of my closest friends that I have grown up with. I had to find friends with the same values and aspirations that I held. My faith has always been one of my biggest values that I hold dearly. It was difficult to make friends and tempting to change my values to develop friends. I wanted to fit in, but I also didn’t want to change and be someone I’m not. I witnessed several scenarios within my first year of high school that I had to turn away from because in my heart I knew they weren’t right. I learned to stay strong and pray to God to help me find my place in the high school environment. Volleyball was one activity that I was able to become a part of as a resolution to being a new kid. I had been cut from the team because there wasn’t a place for me that year. Accepting that this wasn’t where God wanted me to be was extremely difficult for me. He had other plans for me though. I gradually was able to bounce back and become a stronger person through my faith. When rebounding from volleyball God opened more doors and possibilities for me to participate in and enjoy. I was able to take a step to think more about life after high school and what I wanted to pursue in life. I got involved in East Noble’s DECA club, where I successfully found my love for business. Everything I dreamed about for my senior year was taken from me the day that I moved. When I left my old school I not only said goodbye to my friends, but I also said goodbye to an easy senior year. At my new school I am just another body. No one knows who I am. I talk to everyone I meet, trying to make conversation, but yet I still eat alone in the cafeteria every day, listening to everyone laugh while I try to hold back my tears.
This code of chivalry all came from King Arthur. It all began with Arthur’s father, Uther. Uther gets a sword from the Lady of the Lake and this sword is named Excalibur. Later on in the battle among England, Merlin (the magician) grants Uther his wish in return for whatever he asked for. As for this wish, Uther slept with Egrain’s wife as he asked and impregnated her with his soon to be son, Arthur. When Arthur was born Merlin came for what he was promised, and took Arthur away with him, raising him. What Merlin did know was that Uther’s son was soon to be the new King of England. This soon to be king, Arthur, must become a knight and granted the right to be king. However; there are three examples of chivalry from the two texts, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Morte d’Arthur" are courage, honor and to protect the queen and all women.
T.H. White's novel The Once and Future King presents a code of chivalry that outlines the expected knightly behavior of the time. This particular code stresses loyalty to one's liege, love and respect toward women, and absolute devotion to justice. At the height of Arthur's kingdom, this code was widely accepted by all. However, as Arthur's kingdom begins to decline, the code of chivalry begins to hold less importance among the people. The fall of Arthur's kingdom is directly related to the absence of the code of chivalry in the behavior of the Knights of the Round Table. Sir Lancelot betrays Arthur when he has an adulteress affair with Guenever. Sir Lancelot also disrespects women when he leaves Elaine to be with Guenever in Camelot. King Arthur himself is disloyal to justice when he allows Guenever to be rescued by Lancelot.

The epic poem, “The Lay of the Nibelungs” (1200’s), set to practice the major pillars in the code of chivalry that the Duke of Burgundy in the 14th century eventually condensed and ascribed to the Burgundian Knights: Faith, Charity, Justice, Sagacity, Prudence, Temperance, Resolution, Truth, Liberality, Diligence, Hope, and Valor. Though values bear merit, “The Lay of the Nibelungs” teaches that true worth and longevity comes from assessing the situation and applying intellect to the code, from submitting to God, and from not cheating the system (the laws and cultural norms of the time that be).
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an epic poem about a knight in King Arthur’s court. The knights of King Arthur were know to follow a strict code of chivalry. In the beginning of the story, the Green Knight came to King Arthur’s court to play a game. This particular game is called the beheading game. In this game, one person strikes the other in the neck and the other receives the blow, and after a set amount of time, the blow is returned. Sir Gawain decides to take the challenge and play with the Green Knight, and the date is set for a year and one day. Sir Gawain must come and find the Green Knight on this day and receive his blow. The age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left undressed on earth.” Around the 1200’s, the tale of King Arthur and Merlin started to emerge and show the way of how knights lived in their days. When we think of King Arthur, we think of knights, swords, jousting, and the roundtable, but there was a code in which all of these were influenced by. If you were to be a knight, you were to live under a code called chivalry, which is kind of like the Anglo-Saxon code to the Anglo-Saxon warriors. This past fall I tried out for the varsity basketball team at my high school. I had played both on the freshman team and then last year on the junior varsity team. Playing on the varsity team is all I’ve wanted to do. I’d practiced all summer and in September and October to get ready for the try-outs at the beginning of November. Unfortunately I did not make the team. It was a huge blow for me because I had worked really hard and had expected to make it. Thankfully my moms and my friends were there to remind me that there were other paths to pursue my dreams. I could have easily been bitter and decided to stop caring, but they wouldn’t let me. I was humbled by this experience and decided to turn it into a positive. I’ve since decided to join the Wilson Live club at school. It’s a group that films and commentates sports events at school. All throughout high school I played on the softball team. Proceeding the season before where we went undefeated with a district championship, my senior year we were supposed to be unstoppable. We received a few new players to add on to our army and the entire school was counting on our run to state. I was so excited to have an amazing end to my high school softball career, but unfortunately my dream was cut short when we lost in the first round of districts. I did not know that loss would change me the way it did.

The Knight’s Tale made sure to exemplify the idea of courtly love and what it truly means to be a knight who follows the code of chivalry. Starting high school is tough for some people. Moving to a new city is also tough for some people. Or me I had to deal with both. I can remember my very first day of high school, I was so nervous. I had lost everything at this point. My schooling was going down hill, my friends were non existent, and my family didn't bother to claim me. My world quickly became a dark Allen Poe poem. Throughout all the turmoil I endured, God must of seen how hard I was clinging on to my faith. A year later I ended up being blessed when my grandparents took me in. As the years progressed my grandparents reminded me that I am a beautiful young woman who can amount to anything and everything I want to. Throughout my high school career I joined clubs, and improved my grades. I had always been so afraid to join any type of sport. I would sit on the side lines of my brother and sisters games and sit there in awe, wishing it could be me on the field. My 11th grade year i finally muster the courage to try out for lacrosse. Life is a roller coaster filled with many ups and downs. One minute, you are on top of the world and loving life; the next, something happens that will change your life forever. For me, I had a great life in the small, quaint town of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. When I was there, I had a great group of friends that I hung out with practically every day, and all my family is there. Everything was fine until I moved to Palm Bay, Florida about five months ago. Moving can be a big burden on you, especially when it is three-quarters through your freshman year. Not to mention a thousand miles away from most of your family, and your friends. Most of the effects of moving many times are poor, but there is only one benefit that I can think of. Sure it makes you a stronger person and you meet new people, but the adjustment and change will get to you.
I was devastated when I was cut from the team. Volleyball was my life; I absolutely loved the sport. How could they do this to me? Everyone told me things would turn out fine, but how did they know? A close friend of mine wrote me a letter stating, “I know that right now it is hard to accept the paths that God has chosen for us, but I am sure whatever you decide to do with what has been thrown in your way you can surpass everyone else”.
