Social Classes How are people in society categorized? Many are by class as in how much money one makes a year, how many cars one has, or how big their house is. Many don’t even mind the social class, but it has a big role in society. Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status. Many people believe that if one is lucky and born rich they will be rich their whole lives and if one is born poor, they will be poor their whole lives and never be able to get out of being poor. In the book The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is about the life of Marji, a 12 year old girl, who lives in Iran during the Islamic Revolution; which is the contradiction between private and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval. Throughout the book it shows a series of how important social class is in their country, Iran, and how she and the people around her get affected by it. One day when Marjane and her mom come home they find Mrs. Nasrine not looking to well. When she explains “you see this?’ ‘It’s a plastic key painted gold” said marjanes mother. “They gave this to my son at school. They told the boys that if they went to war and they were lucky enough to die, this key would get them to heaven”(99). This explains how the soldiers went to kids schools and asked them to join the war because they will be gifted paradise after they die fighting for the country, which is a lie. If there were no war going on there would be no need to be lying to kids.
