In Ms. Boerema’s instructional language arts class, there are three Hispanic students, two Caucasian students, one Asian student, and one African American students. The history of education in the United States is a history of segregation. However, as schools are mirrors reflecting mainstream societal norms (Chartock, 2010; Delpit, 2006)—and, given that our society has not always valued diversity in people, be it due to disability, class, culture, or race—teachers in the past have largely focused their efforts where they could earn the largest return on their investment: the average student .
Educators that have developed an appreciation for diversity will approach teaching with lessons that consider such differences as race, gender, social and economic status, languages, and disabilities. Furthermore, school leaders that understand the importance of multicultural education realize its effects on the learning outcome for all students. It is the school’s responsibility to develop an understanding of each learner and to base teaching and learning experiences on reliable and objective information (Manning & Baruth, 2009).

The 1960s was a period well remembered for all the civil rights movements that occurred during that time frame and the impact these movements had on the social and political dynamics of the United States. The three largest movements that were striving in the 1960s were the African American civil rights movement, the New Left movement and the feminist movement. These three movements were in a lot of ways influenced by each other and were very similar in terms of their goals and strategies. However, within each of these movements there were divisions in the way they tried to approach the issues they were fighting against. As an educator one must understand that the children you will be teaching will all come from different backgrounds, different ethnicities, different homes with different values. No one student will be the same, and no one student will learn the same. The role of a modern educator is to harness this idea of diversity and channel it into a positive learning atmosphere for children of all backgrounds. “I define culturally responsive teaching as using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them” (Gay, 2013, p.50.). The importance of having a curriculum that accommodates diverse learners, it allows the child to learn at their own level or ability. A child with emotional and intellectual challenges may not have the verbal or comprehension skills or the ability to control their body as their peers. With this in mind, classes with diverse learners can excel with an adjusted curriculum. With the range of diversity in the students of a modern classroom becoming larger, it is inevitable that the obstacles a teacher must overcome to reach this goal are becoming more difficult and complex. However, it’s important for teachers to remember that most students want to succeed just as much as we want them to. It’s only when we don’t set them up for success and lose hope in them that they begin to do the same. Teachers must be mindful of the evidence that teaching SE, while still valuing other dialects, will create the most inclusive and effective educational environment. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students to gain a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably from a judgmental and prejudiced view. Diversity has a broad range of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their cultural and linguistic skills to American classrooms.
