The love that most humans hold in their hearts is bountiful and can only be explained as mysterious. Well, in Peg Kehret's novel Abduction, love is explored and tested to the greatest extent. Bonnie, a young, adolescent girl is tested when her brother Matt Shotler is kidnapped. Bonnie will stop at nothing to get her brother back from his evil captor, Denny Thurmann. There are many things we can learn from this novel; however, only one really stands out. One lesson the story suggests, is to never lose faith in the ones you love and know that they will come through for you. The author uses many emotions in her writing to stress the importance of finding Matt. For example, Bonnie goes to the grocery store and hands out flyers with information about Matt and his disappearance. These flyers contained information that was not very helpful, such as Matt’s favorite color and food. As Bonnie says, “My flyers may be small … but they’re better than nothing” (Kehret 101). This quote is trying to show that no matter how big or small the flyers are they still contribute to finding Matt. The author also uses Bonnie’s thoughts to create an uneasy feeling for the reader. When Bonnie first spots Matt, he is in disguise and it becomes a critical moment in the book showing how even if Matt looks different she could still determine it was him. Bonnie’s faith led her to keep searching for Matt even if she was not certain it was him. “ The first Mariner’s game of my life, Bonnie thought, and I’m missing the best part, because I’m on a wild-goose chase after a kid with black hair and glasses who looks a little bit like my brother.
