She is setting the atmosphere for this rendezvous and fulfills the vital task of creating a good impression in front of Beowulf. More specifically, when the quote says, “[O]ffering the goblet to all ranks”, it enhances her role as a peace-weaver, as it draws attention to her treating all classes equally and creating unity in order to maintain the peace within this culture. Good Anglo-Saxon women are peaceful and unassertive, greeting guests and serving drinks to the warriors and other men in the meadhall. This device is used not only to introduce her to the reader, but also to reinforce her presence as the Queen. Instead of just inviting her to speak, it ironically undermines her authority and magnifies the need of intervention on someone else’s part.
