Like Meredith Monk, Pamela Z has a virtuosic voice and allow the listener to create their own interpretation. Pamela Z is a composer, who performers her compositions with her highly developed voice, and electric looping and sequencing systems. Pamela Z studied voice at the University of Colorado, College of Music. Shortly after college, she discovered experimental and contemporary music. Even though Z was trained to perform classical music, she looked for ways to perform contemporary music. She bought a delay unit and began creating loops using her voice. This was just the beginning of Pamela Z’s artistry. After experimenting with looping, Z started to experiment with texture, rhythm, various vocal techniques, and incorporating text in her pieces. Her music was very primal, but with a modern twist. I really enjoyed her piece Hocket. Hocket was rhythmic and simple, but there were endless interpretations available. I liked this piece because it reminded me of people and time periods I have learned in history course. Monk then takes this element of familiarity and introduces something extremely modern. This mix of ancient and modern helped me appreciate her work. Dolmen Music was a more challenging piece. This piece is ritualistic with a historical element. I love history, and I believe that is why I enjoyed Meredith Monk’s music. Monk allows the listeners to go back in time, while understanding reality is still in present time. In her piece, Songs of Ascension, the visual element of the tower and staircases allow the listen to move through the experience of modern and ancient.
