During my life as a student of the University Of Arkansas, I have confronted an adversity which have become in an important part at the same time. I can say that this adversity have been the adaptation to the educative system of the University Of Arkansas. A new language, and a math level have been the different obstacles that I have to deal each day to achieve a better adaptation to this system. First of all, as a Spanish speaker have been difficult challenge to understand academic subjects in a different language. Distinct accents and different ways of expression showed me in my first semester that in some occasions was difficult to understand my teachers; however, trough the time, I noticed that I started getting listening skills that helped to have a better understating in my classes. …show more content…
As a result, I had many problems to solve math problems in my precalculus class because I had not necessary knowledge to solve and find the right answers. As a consequence of it, I had to retake this class to obtain a better understanding of the mathematic sciences. These two obstacles are the main point to achieve a better adaptation in this system of education. However, to overcome this adversity, I have had that do several things. For example, I have had to practice my listening and speaking skills to achieve a better understanding in the topics taught by my professors. Also, I have had to take office hour, do extra math problem, and ask more questions in math class to reduce each day more the deficiencies that I have in math. The books A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a fictional book, and Iqbal a fictional book, share the same theory. A Long Walk to Water is a book about the true story of Salva; a little boy that gets separated from his family because of the war in South Sudan and later becomes the leader of a group called the Lost Boys of South Sudan. This novel also includes a fictional story of Nya, a little girl that can’t go to school, because she has to walk to the water well twice a day, taking up most of the day. Salva helps Nya get a water well in her village years later by using his organization, Water for South Sudan. Iqbal is the true story of Iqbal Masih, a little boy that became a child slave, but was able to set himself and his friends free from slavery. This book is told in the point of view of Fatima a fictional little girl that was one of the children who was enslaved in the same factory as Iqbal. In each book, the characters grow stronger because of a cultural conflict. Cultural conflicts can force people to become stronger.
The idea of taking risks appeal to most people, but what is actually learned from the act of risk taking? In the two readings, “Breaking through Uncertainty –Welcome Adversity,” by Jim McCormick, and “Neighbours,” by Lien Chao, the benefit derived from taking risks is explored. In McCormick’s article, a parachuting jump mishap leads to his revelation that confidence and certainty can be found. Chao’s short story deals with Sally befriending an elderly couple and joining them for Canada Day celebrations, and along the way realizes what’s important to herself. Though “Breaking Through Uncertainty –Welcome Adversity,” deals with a life saving risk, “Neighbours” is more about a personal risk, something that demonstrates much greater benefits as personal satisfaction.
Adversity enhances ones’ positive characteristics due to the provision of an ideal environment for establishing integrity and developing a mature mindset. This conclusion is valid because people tend to learn from their mistakes, thus gain a broader perspective on life.
Who we really are, what our real character is only truly elicited when we are challenged, as a proverb states, “In the darkest hour shines the brightest light.” Our true character shines through when we are pushed to our extremes and are placed in situations outside of the norm. Horace claims that when someone is faced with an adversity or a challenge, they are more likely to discover talents that they thought they never had. I agree with his claim that adversity breeds talents and strengthens our character, but still understand the importance of prosperity in developing talents.

William Cullen Bryant is one of the most influential people of his time. He was born on November 3, 1794. He is most well-known for writing his poem “Thanatopsis”, which would roughly translate from Greek to “a meditation upon death” in English. This poem is by far his most popular poem. He spent majority of his life studying law, then died as the editor of the New York Evening Post. He was extremely politically fueled and also did not agree with the commonly accepted view of heaven and religion; this idea is shown in his poem. Overall, William Cullen Bryant is the most important American romantic poet of his time.
In all parts of life there are periods of adversity that we must face, the real challenge however, is what and how we gain from conquering those trials. There have been many times that I have been faced with adversity, it has happened in all aspects of my life at one time or another. Whether it is dealing with the ups and downs of hockey or balancing the pressure that comes with an elite hockey schedule and high school, there are always obstacles. Some of these challenges can bring about positive effects that influence the path of one’s life. In one such experience of mine, the amount of adversity was not near as great as the positive out come that came from my experience.
I had to overcome many obstacles in my life, but the most difficult one I had to overcome was people. I say this because sometimes certain individuals will try to knock you down or make you feel like you are less then what you are. My whole life I had many people who told me I didn’t have the ability to do something. For example many of my peers told me I was too small to play freshmen football three years ago. I almost believe them because I did realize that I only stood 4 feet 11inches tall and only weighed 83.5 pounds. Although my love for the game driven me to have faith in myself and I was going to prove to everyone that size didn’t matter and it is the will in the person that determines if they can play. I didn’t get much playing time freshmen year most of it was on special teams and probably got a hand full of downs on defense.
As a child my parents worried about my educational development. They didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep up with the other children. I was in the third grade and didn’t know any English. I struggled academically my remaining elementary years to catch up to the other children, but it wasn’t long until I exceeded my peers in middle school.
However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Nonetheless, this circumstance made me very diligent in all my classes, for it made me very attentive to the topics discussed, and it made me evaluate the extent to which I studied. As a result, with my grades and work ethics throughout the year, I proved those teachers wrong and received an apology from the one I came to admire
Enrolling in a college is one thing but actually attending classes and finishing college is harder than it seems. Regardless of all of the obstacles that come our way, there are always resources to help you overcome them to succeed. First colleges aren’t cheap and working may not be enough to pay or tuition but you can qualify for financial aid, grants, and loans. Another is organizing your time by having a job that cooperates with your school schedule and also allows you to have study time. Lastly you need to believe in yourself if you don’t you will not succeed.
Overcoming Obstacles Throughout a persons life, they are faced with different obstacles, and different challenges of all different types. My life in particular has been full of ups and downs, especially towards my soccer career. In the novel The Pact, three boys, George, Rameck, and Sam, are faced with many obstacles throughout their lives, where they must learn to overcome and achieve great success on their own will power. Essentially, I did the same thing. My soccer career has been one of my most difficult life challenges, creating the person I am today.
I always feel the obligation in doing my best in many things in life. Accompanied by this outlook, I am pleased to say that I have had a good amount of success in my academic achievements. However, not every subject in school has not been easy for me. Math and Science have created many difficulties and challenges for me.
To the students, the result of this study can help them be aware of their own difficulties and serve as their guide to have a better result in solving mathematical problems.
I used to struggle with multiplication tables to the point where I would fail all of the in class quizzes. With plenty of practice and help from my grandmother, I have improved greatly in that area. This helps me complete more difficult math problems much faster. I have learned the concepts behind math as well as the math itself. In my calculus class, my teacher would always explain how a formula was created and why it works before he explained how it was used. This has helped me see the deeper purpose of math instead of just the surface, where we are told to do a problem without really knowing why. Another specific math topic that I have struggled with in the past is factoring. When the concept was first introduced to me, I was so confused that I got every single problem wrong. I asked for help every time but I just did not understand how someone could figure out the numbers off the top of their head. Since then, I have done hundreds of factoring problems in order to practice. Now, I get almost every problem right. I purposefully did these problems so that I could improve my skills, since I knew I would need them in the future. Overall, I think I have also improved my patient with math. I am able to think critically about a problem and figure out why I’m getting it wrong instead of instantly getting angry and giving up. That’s also a good skill to
