Native American Genocide: America's Developmental Shame

Martin Luther King Jr once stated, “Our Nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race”. The speeches within this seminar contribute to this argument as examples for this statement, as they display the harsh and cruel treatment the natives experienced during America’s development. During the nation’s developmental period, Americans wanted to strip the natives of their religious belief because they viewed as silly and meaningless. They did not respect the religion, that the Natives cherished greatly, and forced their Christian ways on the polytheistic Native Americans. This belief was an important aspect of a Native’s life at the time and this central belief is the focus of the Native’s customs. They believe that everything that lives on this earth has a purpose to aid with their survival and the Great Spirit did all of it as an act to express his love for his red children. The Natives have immense pride in this belief, but the American settlers ignored their honor and tried to persuade the Natives to adopt their Christian customs and leave their own beliefs behind. They are ignorant of the Native customs and tries to convince them that the Christian God is better than the Great Spirit. The Natives realize, however, that the Christian beliefs are not in their favor as the Christian “God is not [their] God. [The Christian] God loves [the Americans] and hates [the Natives]... He has forsaken his red children- if they really are His...The white man’s God cannot love [the Natives] or He would protect them” (The Sacred Soil by Chief Seattle 1). The act of trying to convince the inaccuracy of the Native customs displaces to amount of disrespect the American settlers have towards the Natives. They try to replace the “false” beliefs with Christian beliefs that are not applicable to the Native lifestyle. They
