Can you live without using your phone or the Internet for a day? This would not be difficult ten years ago when mobile devices and the Internet were still under development. However, with the increase of technology, people have more access to information through Internet. While Internet, a problem has occurred without notice: information overload. Social media plays an important role in information overload. People are constantly checking their phones for text message, e-mails, news, and celebrity updates. Even sometimes when there is no pop-ups, we still feel like we need to refresh Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see what’s going on around world. Thanks to the invention of mobile devices and the Internet, information are produced so quickly and spread so widely. While we are enjoying information on fingertip, excess information has lead to a phenomenon- information overload. Information overload can be defined as the amount of work exceed individual’s ability to mange it affectively, as a result, the overload creates a stress beyond their coping mechanism (Allen and Wilson 34). Some common symptoms are: procrastination, reduced productivity, internet addiction, which dramatically impact people’s life and work. Individuals should take back control of their lives from information overload because they need to defend their rights not to know.

Information overload is an issue that has been underestimated. With the development of technology and social media, we do not realize how much information we are absorbing. Compared to a decade ago, television was our main source of getting information. Nowadays, smart phones are inseparable from our lives. When we walk down the street, it is difficult not to spot...

Don’t let the Internet kidnap your life. As technology and information evolves, the use of more terminals such as smart phones and tablets overflown. It changes our lives, while it distances us. Some coping mechanisms may help alleviate the symptoms of information overload and slowly take back our lives. In the first place, put down your laptops and smart phones and initiate a face-to-face conversation with your friends and families. Cyber communication maybe handy to use, but it does not express any emotion behind the texts. Filtering and withdrawing are suitable strategies for coping with information overload (Savolainen, 611). Connect and disconnect, don’t let internet fulfill our lives. Eventually, the balance between our lives online and offline should guild us toward a healthier lifestyle.
