Shakespeare and Webster show their female characters in the plays, Othello and The Duchess of Malfi defy conventions of society whilst in a where male individuals dominated female individuals. Shakespeare’s Othello was set in the 18th century during the Jacobean era and John Webster’s ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ was set in the 16th century during the Elizabethan era.
The portrayal of women in Shakespeare’s Othello is traditional as although they are under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a positive and self-confident role model, they are still expected to tolerate and follow rules. Their sole purpose was to continue the family generations (have children) A females body was the key to reproducing her husband's or fathers bloodlines therefore, it was necessary that the body remained 'unpolluted' with sexual contact from unapproved males. Antonio was seen as an unapproved male in the eyes of the Duchess' brothers thus, the Duchess established her political authority to find a excuse in achieving her desire to marry for love. Through her title she was able to understand the law of “absolute marriage” and ensured that no one would be able to challenge it because she had a witness. She presents her intelligence, and sidesteps her brother’s scheme to keep her subjugated from remarrying for their self-centred reasons.
