The hunger to win can be a very powerful thing. As demonstrated through Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Nurse Ratched and McMurphy are in constant war for this power over the patients of the ward. McMurphy attempts to give the patients more confidence while Nurse Ratched attempts to keeps things the way they were before he ever showed up. McMurphy’s constant rule breaking has caused Nurse Ratched to slowly break down and lose control over the patients which has declared him as the winner of the war.
A demonstration of McMurphy winning a battle would be the argument about whether or not to play the World Series. During a group session, McMurphy asks if they can watch the World Series instead of doing their daily routine. Nurse Ratched only agrees if he gets enough votes however, McMurphy only receives enough votes after the meeting is over. He gathers the men together around the TV, “And we’re all sitting there lined up in front of that blanked-out TV set, watching the gray screen just like we could see the baseball game clear as day, and she’s ranting and screaming behind us” (Kesey 144). This points out how Nurse Ratched is slowly breaking under McMurphy’s actions. It resembles how he can find a way to go …show more content…

When McMurphy goes and retrieves a pack of cigarettes he breaks the glass. McMurphy, “ He turned and left her sitting there with her face shifting and jerking and walked back across the day room to his chair, lighting up a cigarette”(Kesey 156). As illustrated through the quote McMurphy has almost broken a barrier between him and the Nurse. Her once spotless and perfect window is now broken and anyone can get past. Her face is no longer stern and perfect as it used to be but not it shows an angry look to McMurphy. This puts McMurphy in the winners spot because Nurse Ratched cannot stop his actions before he does
